The primary purpose of this position MAINTENANCE MECHANIC WG-4749-10, is to provide full performance level sheet metal mechanic, carpentry, painting, roofing, locksmithing, sign making work in contructing, installing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying structures, doors, signs and locks and other items requiring close tolerance fit.

Duties

Plan and lay out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications, and work orders in the construction and maintenance of installation facilities. Use a variety of welding processes such as oxyacetylene, electrode arc, submerged arc, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, metal spray arc, and spot and stud welding to join all types of common metals and alloys. Perform preventative maintenance on Vehicle Deterrent systems, Mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, auxiliary equipment, control equipment, GSA locks, vaults, safes, and containers. Operate motorized equipment such as skid steer loader, telehandler, articulating boom lifts, scissor lifts demolition saws, and specialized utility trucks. Use and maintains tools and equipment.

  • Will be required to train/guide lower graded (or other trades) military/civilian employees.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4700 General Maintenance And Operations Work Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Materials PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work requires considerable bending, kneeling, standing, and stooping. On-site work typically requires crawling, climbing on ladders, scaffolds, and roof tops. Work encompasses strenuous physical exertion when bending and shaping the more complex items in handling larger and bulkier material. Requires physical effort which includes prolonged standing on production lines; climbing up and down ladders and scaffolds; working in cramped and awkward positions while installing items; and reaching, lifting, and bending while using hand and powered tools in uncomfortable positions for extended periods. Is frequently required to perform heavy lifting up to 90 pounds in carrying bricks, block, stone, mortar, cement, and sand. NOTE: THIS REQUIRES A PRE EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside shops and outside at job sites. In shops, is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, glue fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment. At job sites, may be exposed to weather conditions and hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders and are subject to cuts, bruises, burns, and contusions. May work in confined areas, such as crawl spaces and attics that may be dusty and dirty. Uses protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, and gloves.
