About the Position: Located in the Pharmacy Department within the Beaufort Naval Hospital at Beaufort, SC. Performs a variety of technical support functions in a pharmacy and applies the following knowledges to perform work: pharmaceutical nomenclature; formulas; strengths; dosage forms of drugs; weights and measures. Applies a wide variety of procedures required in repackaging, bulk compounding, setting up prescriptions for final check by pharmacist, etc. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Performs a variety of complex technical functions to interpret, order, receive, store, and dispense pharmaceuticals from routine to complex controlled substances. Uses computer system for data collections and monitoring. Manage individualized medication profiles, prescription fill data, provide medical information, and identify potential drug interactions and substitutions or generic drug replacement. Processes medication orders by using computerized order entry in and extraction of pertinent drug data from patient charts and/or through patient interview. Interprets the appropriate information and data to identify patient requirements relative to their specific needs. Answers routine questions concerning proper use, dosage, administration, drug interaction, and side effects of medications. Performs technical functions with computer-based systems and software. Required to transcribe prescriptions into the current pharmacy computer system, processes prescriptions with the current pharmacy automation and robotics. Operates work area in an efficient and effective manner in terms of quality and quantity of services provided. Maintains an adequate supply of non-expired medication and ensures general cleanliness of the work area. Clarifies questionable orders with ordering medical provider for instances such as requests for an unknown medication or illegible/ unclear orders and/ or may recommend acceptable substitutes. Serves as a representative of the Pharmacy, often independently, by answering a wide range of inquiries from doctors, nurses, and other staff. Verifies the availability of specific items, e.g., drugs in stock, new drugs on order, and dosage forms available in the pharmacy.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. This position requires a National Agency Check w/ Inquiries (NACI) background check.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination.
  • This position has been designated as a Testing Designated Position and is subject to a pre-employment screening and random testing thereafter.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination. A candidate selected to this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to annual seasonal influenza vaccination.
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
  • This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons in accordance with Army Regulation 40-562, Chapters 3 and 4.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position is inclement weather essential. This means that you must be willing to make every attempt to report for duty on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) Training and Certifications from the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross within 6 months of hire.
  • BLS's from any other vendor are not accepted. Advanced certification (e.g., Advanced Life Support) does not supersede BLS completion.
  • This position may require the employee to wear a uniform, scrubs, or other appropriate medical professional attire while on duty.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes filling prescriptions, distributing pharmaceuticals, and utilizing pharmacy-based computer systems gained in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, or in pharmaceutical firms or laboratories. OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate-level education in Pharmacology or a field directly related to the work of the position, from an accredited college or university. OR Combination of Experience and Education Substitution: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.
