This position is located in the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs (OJP), National Institute of Justice (NIJ), OJP's mission is to increase public safety and improve the fair administration of justice across America through innovative leadership and programs. NIJ's mission is to advance scientific research, development, and evaluation to enhance the administration of justice and public safety.

Duties

Leads the National Institute of Justice's (NIJ's) CrimeSolutions programmatic and operational activities and responsibilities, including the activities of contractors and external researchers to identify and review program evaluation and meta-analysis studies to create online profiles of justice programs and practices. Leads NIJ's responsibilities related to the Evidence Act, including contributions to the Department of Justice's learning agenda and annual evaluation plan. Provides NIJ science staff guidance and assistance with social science and criminal justice research and program evaluation methodology, data collection, and data analysis issues. Reviews social science and criminal justice research documents (reports, solicitations, manuscripts, etc.) for statistical, methodological, and data analytical content. Collaborates across NIJ's science offices to conduct ad hoc assessments of social science, forensic science, and an array of criminal justice topics. Conducts secondary data analysis using data from the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data. Develops a forward-looking vision for strengthening NIJ's ability to respond nimbly to and anticipate future needs and scientific developments. Participates in national scientific conferences, symposia, and interdisciplinary technical/programmatic meetings to present, discuss, and disseminate NIJ social science and criminal research findings, activities, operations, and initiatives.

Qualifications

Basic Entry Requirements: Degree in behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position. -OR- Combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. -OR- Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrates the acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level. Specialized experience is experience which is in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples of specialized experience include: Provides expert analysis and advice on complex Evidence Act program issues and evidence-based data systems such as CrimeSolutions. Serves as an expert on social science and criminal justice statistical and data analytical matters. Formulates, plans, and/or recommends social science and criminal justice research and evaluation projects and programs. Conducts foundational fact-finding social science and criminal justice research and analysis such as aggregate indicators, exploratory studies, descriptive statistics, and basic research. Develops methods and analytical approaches for building evidence within an agency to use data to support criminal justice policy decisions. Provides guidance and assistance on social science research and criminal justice evaluation methodology, data collection, and data analysis issues.
