Duties

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work for approximately 11 months (December to November), and you will be in a non-pay status for one pay period (2 weeks) in late November to early December. Work involves the construction, alteration, installation, repair and modification of items and structures such as frame work, rafters, concrete forms, walls, doors, finished paneling, window frames, interior and exterior trims, staircases, trusses, beams, and miscellaneous items such as workbenches, counter tops, bookcases, equipment cabinets, and computer consoles where accuracy, spacing and fit are essential and structural soundness and appearance are important. Acts as an inspector on outside contracts and on work performed by less than journeymen of the trade. Constructs, rehabilitates, modifies and assembles from blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions, structures such as framework rafters, doors, finished paneling, windows, interior and exterior trims, staircases, trusses and beams, small buildings, building interior finishing, etc., where accuracy and spacing are essential and require journeyman level skills and abilities. Repairs doors, windows, wood substitute items, exterior siding, flooring and interior fabric as necessary in the course of stabilization/restoration and to ensure completeness and structural integrity. Repairs roof sheathing and rafter as required. Fabricates duplicate replacements of deteriorated wood members such as moldings, beams, timbers and stairways. Construction of difficult angle and curved cuts must be exact. Must be able to improvise materials and supplies available because of distance from supplier. Performs manual task such as loading and unloading supplies. Physical Demands: Works at benches or while materials are on support which would require considerable standing, stooping, and bending. Also works on ladders and scaffolds requiring overhead reaching and working in awkward positions. Must occasionally lift and carry up to 40 pounds unassisted, and occasionally lift or move heavier items with the assistance of lifting devise of other workers. Working Conditions: Work is done indoors and outdoors. Some work is performed in the shop area where incumbent is exposed to moderate or high noise levels form operating machinery, saw dust in the air, glue fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment. Incumbent is also exposed to the hazards of ladders and scaffolds and is subject to cuts, bruises, and contusions. Incumbent is required to use protective devices such as earplugs, safety glasses, respirators, gloves, etc. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are NOT suitable for telework. Kalaupapa National Historical Park (NHP) was established in 1980 and is located midway along the north coast of the island of Molokai, in the State of Hawaii. The park is situated entirely within Kalawao County, an isolated peninsula which is governed by the Director of the State Department of Health. A 1,700-foot (500 m) sea cliff separates the peninsula from the rest of the island. There is no road access into the peninsula. Access can only be made by air or on foot by hiking a 3-1/8 mile up or down the sea cliff. The County includes the historic Hansen's disease settlements of Kalawao and Kalaupapa. The park was established to commemorate and preserve the story of those afflicted with this dreaded disease and their forced exile from family and friends.
