What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? The Government Wide direct hire authority for GS-0401 Biological Sciences is being used to fill this position. Salary: $122,198 (Step 01) to $158,860 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Duties

The National Wildlife Health Center in the Midcontinent Region of the USGS provides technical assistance and leadership for addressing health issues involving resources under the Department of the Interior stewardship, fosters partnerships with federal, state, and other agencies to address wildlife health as a component of ecosystem health. The Center investigates highly infectious diseases and other diseases affecting a broad spectrum of wildlife by a multi-disciplinary team of specialists who provide an integrated program of disease diagnosis, field response, technical assistance, research, training, and support services. The Center's research focuses on understanding the ecology of disease to identify the most vulnerable linkages among affected host species, the disease agent, and environmental factors resulting in disease. Our programs aim to use this information to mitigate factors leading to population decline and result the integration of information to develop effective disease prevention and control strategies to assist resource managers improve management of wildlife populations. As a Supervisory Biologist (Deputy Center Director) within the National Wildlife Health Center, some of your specific duties will include:

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels. A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. *OR* B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-14: In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level. Examples of GS-13 level work may include: 1) planning and leading biology projects of substantial depth and/or breadth; 2) analyzing and interpreting biological related project data with novel and obscure problems and publishing or preparing results of findings; 3) developing new or significantly modified biological techniques, methods, or criteria; 4) providing advisory, planning, or reviewing services as a technical specialist on a biological issue. For examples 1-4, the work provided wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
