These positions serve as an Engineering Equipment Operator in a BLM field office. The positions are located in the BLM Oregon State Office, in the Salem, Springfield, or Merlin offices.

Duties

Salary Range for Merlin and Springfield Oregon:$28.45 - $33.21 per hour Salary Range for Salem Oregon:$36.59 - $42.68 per hour Operates one or more pieces of heavy engineering equipment to excavate, backfill, grade or level materials to required grade tolerances, in the reconstruction and maintenance of gravel and/or surfaced highways, timber access roads, and recreation areas. Equipment consists of motor graders, tractors, with attachments, dozer tractors, front-end loaders, backhoes, excavators, brush cutters, compaction roller, and motorized brooms. Work performed includes digging and cleaning ditchers, removing slides and rocks, removing slash and debris left by construction or maintenance operations, snow and ice removal, and otherwise maintaining road surfaces, ditches and right-of-ways. Operates various types of heavy equipment to repair washouts, earth slides, and damage to road shoulders caused by storms. Transferring material into dumb trucks and maneuvering equipment in confined areas. Operates light and heavy trucks (some with trailers) including pickups, flatbeds, tank trucks, 50-ton lowboys and 25-ton dumb trucks. Maintains assigned equipment including minor maintenance and preventative maintenance. Some manual labor may be necessary.

Qualifications

There is no required length of time of qualifying experience or training. However, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to support the SCREEN-OUT Element of: Your ability to perform the duties of a Engineering Equipment Operator without more than normal supervision. Examples of such experience include: (1) operating gasoline or diesel powered equipment such as road graders, bulldozers, excavators, backhoes, or trench diggers in all terrain environments; (2) maintaining and/or repairing roads, ditches, shoulders, or road beds; (3) conducting equipment and/or motor vehicle routine/minor preventive maintenance, repairs, and/or safety inspections; (4) reading and/or interpreting specifications or drawings provided by engineers. If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN-OUT Element above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. Additional SCREEN-OUT Element: This position performs operation of a variety of motor vehicles such as light and heavy duty pickup trucks, vans, dump trucks, flatbeds, water tanker trucks, semis, lowboys, etc. to transport earth, sand, stone, water, equipment, supplies, and people. Vehicles may weigh in excess of 32,000 pounds and a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required. This license must be obtained prior to entry on duty. Candidates who do not meet this requirement will receive no further consideration for this position. Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in constantly climbing in and out of different machines and pushing and pulling levers continuously while machine is in operation. Work is strenuous because of the large equipment operated, the adjustments made, and the adverse operating conditions. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. The incumbent is required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and often puts forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment and tools. Working Conditions: The operation of large and complicated gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment in difficult circumstances increases exposure and risk of injury. The incumbent works both inside and outside and is exposed to hot and humid weather and/or extremely cold weather with temperatures ranging from below 0 to above 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice, road oils, and other items such as loose gravel and rocks may create hazardous conditions. The operator is subjected to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, oils, solvents, and fumes from motors and exhausts. When working inside, the incumbent must ensure proper ventilation to minimize fumes caused by equipment or vehicles. The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises and strains while servicing and operating equipment. The incumbent is required to follow all prescribed safety practices and use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as protective hearing devices and hard hats to prevent injury.
