The primary purpose of this position is to operate one or more types of gasoline, diesel, or electric powered wheeled vehicles typically having a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of more than 26,000 and up to 32,000 pounds.

Duties

1. Drives one or more types of heavy trucks, such as platform trucks, van trucks, stake trucks, trash/garbage trucks or dump trucks, which are typically equipped with air brakes. 2. Operates one or more electric, LPG, or diesel powered fork lift trucks to facilitate loading and unloading duties. May be required to transport bulky and unwieldy items. Occasionally drives outside over rough surfaces. 3. Performs operator maintenance, such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, cleaning and washing of vehicles, and performing inspection checklists to ensure safe and proper operation. 4. Maintains records and documents actions, such as operator inspection checklists/forms and accident/incident reports. Checks material transported against invoices, verifies status of cargo, and obtains signature of receiving personnel. Uses two-way radio (or other device) to maintain communications with dispatcher/supervisor on assignments and locations. 5. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the Transportation/Mobile Equipment Operation Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: I. Knowledge of operating one or more gasoline, diesel, or electric powered wheeled vehicles with a GVW of more than 26,000 and up to 32,000 pounds such as platform trucks, van trucks, stake trucks, passenger buses, trash/garbage trucks, or dump trucks. 2. Knowledge of cargo handling and hauling and techniques for safeguarding and protecting cargo. 3. Knowledge of traffic and safety regulations, practices, and procedures pertaining to motor vehicle and fork lift operation. 4. Knowledge of operating one or more electric, LPG, or diesel powered fork lifts. 5. Ability to judge road/traffic conditions and read maps to determine the shortest and safest route; and meet pickup and delivery deadlines and schedules. 6. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. related to motor vehicle, fork lift, and power take-off unit operation and preventive maintenance. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
