About the Position: Serves as a Public Safety Dispatcher, providing emergency police, fire, and medical services to the public by answering emergency 911 calls and dispatching appropriate personnel and equipment.

Duties

Determine, based on local policy and procedure, appropriate jurisdiction and emergency services to be rendered. Provide emergency medical dispatching assistance to callers with medical emergencies using emergency medical dispatch system. Utilize computer keyboard to acknowledge or defer alarms, determine the priority level of each alarm generated, determine the operational procedures for the alarm and act in accordance with procedures. Interrogate callers to determine the problem and the nature of the call and simultaneously inputs pertinent information, as information is received, into the Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) system. Receive and evaluate of 911 emergency calls, to include installation fire, police, ambulance service, and Commercial Intrusion Detection System alarms. Perform crisis intervention with distraught emergency callers during high-risk situations. Initiate an immediate, appropriate, emergency response and provide the caller with advanced life support. Refer non-emergency callers to appropriate department/agency for assistance.

Requirements

  • Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
  • Must obtain and maintain the following certifications within 6 months of employment: Telecommunicator I and II, Hazardous Materials Awareness.
  • Within the first year of occupying the position, incumbent must obtain and then continue to maintain the following Certifications: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Army Law Enforcement Tracking and Reporting System (ALERTS).
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid State Driver's license to perform the duties of this position.
  • Incumbent will be required to attend Continuous current certification as a condition of employment.
  • The incumbent is responsible for attaining continuing dispatch and Intrusion Detection education requirements through in-service training that is offered locally.
  • Position is subject to shift work where the incumbent is required to work an alternate work schedule, which requires an uncommon tour of duty (including nights, weekends and holidays).
  • Designated Mission Essential Position: Incumbent is required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations as directed by the Commander.
  • May be required to remain on duty after the official shift ends, i.e., mandatory overtime; subject to recall to duty. Incumbent must maintain a functioning telephone to aid in contact during recall/emergency situations.
  • This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program.
  • Individuals not currently occupying a TDP position must successfully complete a pre-appointment drug test prior to being placed into this position.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business requirement of 5% of the time.
  • Within the first year of occupying the position, incumbent must obtain and then continue to maintain the following Certifications: National Crime Information Center (NCIC), and Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System. (TLETS).

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Assisting with dispatching calls for public service assistance to the appropriate discipline (e.g., Police, Fire, Emergency Medical Service); 2) using telecommunications equipment such as computer aided dispatch systems, 911 emergency telephone equipment and radio systems to perform dispatching tasks; and 3) operating office automation software to create or maintain data pertinent to emergency dispatch operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-05).
