Duties

If selected for this position, you will serve as a Supervisory Paralegal Specialist in the Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of California, Criminal Division. You will be responsible for planning, managing, and directing legal support functions within the various Criminal Division sections and performing legal administrative and paralegal work. As a Supervisory Paralegal Specialist in the Criminal Division, duties will include: Serving as an advisor to the Criminal Division Chief in the managing and formulation of policies and procedures within the Division. Developing overall plans and objectives for Criminal Division Sections regarding legal administrative and paralegal support operations. Planning work to be accomplished by legal support employees in subordinate units. Setting priorities and preparing schedules for completion of work. Preparing individual work plans, performance standards, and performance evaluations for subordinate legal staff. Interviewing and recommending candidates for subordinate positions. Formulating training plans and conducting on-the-job training. Directing and performing paralegal support duties which may involve support in trials, hearings, and discovery to assist attorneys in complex criminal cases. Providing guidance in the preparation of legal documents and memoranda for AUSAs. Performing and updating topical in-depth legal research using automated research tools as well as traditional resources. Serving as technical expert for assigned types of Division litigation or responsibility. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.

  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.
  • If selected, you will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a one year supervisory or managerial probationary period unless this requirement has been met previously.

Qualifications

To be eligible at the GS-13 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the federal service. Specialized Experienceis defined as working as a paralegal or supervisory paralegal in a legal office environment; providing administrative and technical legal expertise; performing legal research and analysis in support of litigation; examining, processing, preparing and maintaining a variety of trial-related documents; conducting analysis and evaluation of data in response to complex or sensitive requests, and preparing recommendations; communicating assignments and deadlines to the team; and coaching, training and mentoring lesser experienced and new paralegals on the operations and procedures of the Office.
