Duties

These positions serve as a Park Ranger for the Canyon Country, Paria River and Green River Districts. Staffs the Kane Gulch Ranger Station and provides information to the public regarding trail and water conditions. Maintains recreation sites, trailheads and kiosks and updates Kiosk information and signage as needed. Operates a Point Of Sales system and processes credit card transactions for purchases. Presents a positive image of the BLM and conducts visitor contacts in a courteous, professional and friendly manner. Assists with monitoring Special Recreation Permits (SRPs), ensuring compliance, issuing permits, reporting violations to Law Enforcement. Responds to emergency situations. Develops and maintains interpretive materials and educational displays. Conducts day and multi-day backcountry patrols to assess trail and water conditions, perform permit compliance checks, and monitor cultural resources. Leads volunteer groups and conservation corps groups on recreation related projects. Works with the public and conducts permit compliance and safety checks.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified: 1) An applicant appointed to this position must possess (or obtain within 30 days of entrance on duty) and maintain a valid state driver's license while employed in this position. In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. To qualify at the GS-05 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Park Ranger. Qualifying specialized experience includes: interacting with the public and answering questions related to recreation resources; using computer systems to enter data and retrieve reports; hiking and navigating backcountry trails; and using hand tools to perform simple tasks. OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have four (4) years (120 semester hours) of education above high school, leading to a bachelor's degree in a related field of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. Undergraduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position. To qualify at the GS-07 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Park Ranger. Qualifying specialized experience includes: staffing a high volume visitor contact station, interacting with the public, and providing information to visitors regarding trail and water conditions and responsible visitation of recreation and cultural resources; conducting day and overnight backcountry patrols to monitor trail and water conditions and completing patrol reports; issuing hiking permits and monitoring trails and trailheads for permit compliance; and installing and updating kiosk and visitor information signs using simple hand tools. OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have one (1) full year (18 semester hours) of graduate-level education in a related field of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces. The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads. Work Environment: Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.
