About the Position: This position is located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Department of Public Health, Radiation Center in Bethesda, MD. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Function as the Associate Radiation Safety Officer, the organizational subject matter expert in radiation safety, for staff and patients, emergency response, and oversight of ionizing and non-ionizing machines in healthcare. Provide general surveillance of radiation safety activities including personnel, facility and environmental monitoring. Perform a variety of new studies, surveys, and evaluations of complex and sophisticated technical problems emanating from present and proposed ionizing radiation sources. Review proposals, protocols, and applications involving the use of radioactive materials and/or radiation generating devices and approves IAW Radiation Safety guidelines. Recommend technical procedures to improve, rectify, or improve Radiation Protection Programs. Modify or develop new approaches, methods, techniques, equipment or procedures to identify and/or resolve personnel radiation hazard issues. Facilitate training to users of medical radiation consistent with the statutory requirements of the Code of Federal Regulations. Evaluate work performance of subordinates in order to give advice, counsel, or instruction. Supervises, manages and/or oversees multidisciplinary team of Health Physicists and other scientists.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for a Supervisory Health Physicist: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education. OR C. Certification: Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes managing radiation safety programs in support of personnel using radioactive materials and/or radiation sources; providing technical advice and consultation on matters pertaining to ionizing radiation and radioactive waste and disposal in a hospital setting; facilitating training to users of medical radiation such as radiologists, nuclear physicians, endocrinologists, and cardiologists; and providing supervision, leadership, oversight, or direction to employees and their work. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-13). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
