This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for DoD Certain Competitive Service Positions to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. This position is located with the 406th Army Field Support Brigade, Maintenance Division, Fort Belvoir, VA.

Duties

Removes and replaces major components (engines, transmissions, differentials). Uses oxygen and acetylene torches, gasoline powered arc welders, when performing welding and cutting duties in the field. Makes operational checkout on electrical circuits, equipment, and accessories, working from blueprints, manuals, diagrams, checklists, and other instructions. Repairs AC/DC welders, battery chargers, and generators.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination.
  • The position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter.
  • Must currently possess a valid commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with P endorsement or CDL Class A at the time of entrance on duty and maintain thereafter.
  • This position requires a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) background investigation.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 60 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens ** Veteran's preference and military spouse preference (MSP) does not apply. ** Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Ability to inspect, service and repair a variety of heavy mobile equipment and powered support systems (e.g. bulldozers, mobile cranes, heavy combat equipment, fire engine, pump trucks, dump trucks, tractor and similar heavy construction and earth moving vehicles); use troubleshooting techniques to determine cause of malfunctions; ability to use blueprints, technical manuals, illustrations, diagrams and schematics; and ability to use judgment in determining the best work method and work sequences to use in making extensive and complex repairs; ability to work independently and in team environment. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORT- Works in tiring and uncomfortable positions, and must frequently bend, stretch, and crouch. Sometimes works on top of and under vehicles, in cramped or awkward positions. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 60 pounds, and occasionally more. WORKING CONDITIONS- Works inside and outside. Shop areas are frequently inadequately heated. Subject to drafts, noise, dust, heat, fumes, and grease. Stands and lies on hard, damp surfaces. Frequently exposed to possibility of cuts, shocks, bruises, and strain, as well as burns and skin irritations from acids and fluids. Must wear safety shoes and other safety/protective items as may be prescribed.
