The Assistant Chief Radiologic Technologist is responsible for oversight of clinical operations, predominantly exercised through Section Supervisors in the Imaging Sections of General Radiography (GR), CT (Computed Tomography), Ultrasound (US), Interventional Radiology (IR) and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). Oversight ensures the delivery of high-quality diagnostic and therapeutic radiologic and nuclear medicine services in the Western North Carolina VA Health Care System.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: The incumbent works under the supervision of the Chief Technologist and Imaging Service Chief and is expected to carry out his/her clinical and non-clinical duties with considerable independence. In the absence of the Chief Technologist and Imaging Service Chief, the incumbent assists Imaging Leadership in carrying out daily activities. Provide guidance and oversight of Quality Management in the Imaging Service. Guide and supervise Section Supervisors on establishing and maintaining quality standards to include equipment quality control, image quality, technologist competencies, and clinical integration. Has technical oversight for Quality Assurance and Quality Control for assigned areas. Assigns responsibility, reviews results, maintains records, and takes corrective action as needed for Quality Assurance and Quality Control for the assigned areas. Guide Section Supervisors on oversight of technologist competencies and proficiency as a dynamic process of ongoing education and training. Develop and implement orders management processes that establish roles and responsibilities of MSA's, technologists and radiologists to achieve effective disposition of Imaging orders. Assists in preparing and justifying projected budget requests for approval by Fiscal Service and Medical Center Director. Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 8:00am till 4:30pm Telework: Ad-hoc at the service discretion. Virtual: This is not a virtual position.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Physical Requirements stated below. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level of GS-10. Qualifying experience includes: evaluates new products and equipment, making recommendations to supervisor concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations. [The technologist] informs higher level management of anticipated staffing variances and informally recommends promotions, reassignments, or other personnel changes such as retention or release of probationary employees, and recognition of superior performance in the diagnostic radiologic area. [The technologist] directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff. Experience must demonstrate practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Preferred Experience: At least 1 year of Supervisory and Quality Assurance experience within Imaging Service. References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-25. Subparagraph e. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-11. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-11.??????? Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary, but does require walking between workstations within the Imaging Service. There may be extended periods of time using and sitting in front of computers. There may be periods when bending and kneeling may be required. There may be extended periods of time when there will be work in a cold computer room. Duties may require lifting and carrying computer equipment (approximately 45 lbs) such as monitors, computer processing units (CPUs) and unix processing system (UPS) products.
