These nursing positions are located within the Clinical Center Nursing Department at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Clinical Center (CC), in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The National Institutes of Health (NIH), Clinical Center, is the 200-bed research hospital and ambulatory care research facility in Bethesda, Maryland that supports the Intramural Research Program of the National Institutes of Health. NIH Clinical Center is on the Journey to Magnet® Recognition.

Duties

The Nurse Specialist (Research) will serve as the Research Nurse Coordinator to coordinate care, study management, human subject protection, and protocol compliance for the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI)Undiagnosed Disease Program for a Principal Investigator in the Institute. This position organizationally reports to a Nurse Manager in the Clinical Center Nursing Department. Duties will include: Coordinates research care for individuals who are participants in biomedical research studies at the NIH Clinical Center. Supports Institute Center staff and interdisciplinary patient care teams to identify potential participants for clinical studies. Monitors patients' responses to study and clinical treatment and reports events to a member of the research team. Provides education to patients' and family caregivers regarding study participation, the participant's clinical condition and safety principles related to study enrollment and participation. Records research data such as clinical measurements, patient responses, and study procedures in approved source documents. Develops, coordinates, and manages research studies and evaluation activities that improve outcomes for patients participating in research studies at the NIH Clinical Center. Directs and performs quality assurance and quality control activities as they relate to study adherence, study monitoring, data collection, data abstraction, and data analysis and assures standard operating procedures are followed. Ensures that informed consent is obtained prior to beginning any studies and that it is ongoing through the patient's participation in the research process. Provides patient-focused nursing leadership within the interdisciplinary team and collaborates with team members to create and communicate a research plan of care that balances clinical care needs with research needs and allows for a safe and effective collection of clinical research data.

Qualifications

In order to meet the Basic Qualification Requirements for a Nurse (Research Specialist), GS-0610, you must have: A graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools; AND Passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN); AND A current, active, full and unrestricted license, or registration as a professional nurse from a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Additional Qualification Requirements: In addition to the Basic Qualification Requirements for a Nurse (Research Specialist), GS-0610, you must meet the Additional Qualification Requirement listed below for each grade level: GS-12: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing specialized nursing care in a clinical research environment; implementing program outreach and patient recruitment initiatives for research programs; recruiting and screening new patients and assessing their eligibility for clinical trials; taking care of cancer patients and managing specific nursing aspects of clinical protocols within a research program; providing patient and family counseling, health education, and serving as a patient advocate; and discussing with patients, volunteers, and family members the basis of treatment protocols, clinical trials, or research studies as well as the roles of various team members, protocol specifics and anticipated schedule of events. GS-13:You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: planning, designing, and developing clinical research protocols; providing specialized nursing care to cancer patients in a research environment; participating as a multidisciplinary team member involved in clinical trials including well established communication skills and proficiency in organizing, implementing, coordinating complex treatment and research plans; providing patient and family education and counseling; providing clinical trial design, coordinating and implementing, data, and study data management; and evaluating trends in research study outcomes and compliance, in order to contribute to the design of research studies.
