Duties

GS-6 Duties: The incumbent will assist with sampling water quality of inland lakes, rivers, and at Lake Michigan beach sites throughout the Lakeshore. Incumbent will assist in the preparation of reports, plans, and guidelines. Draft project reports may include literature research, descriptions of methods, preparation of graphs and charts, and summary of findings. Specific duties include performing routine and recurring testing of water quality, both chemical and bacteriological; maintaining a laboratory for fecal bacteria testing; recording all data collected and providing preliminary assessment and classification of the information; using a Global Positioning System device to locate and mark sampling sites in remote locations; portaging and paddling a canoe for long distances to sample interior lakes; processing water samples for laboratory analysis according to detailed standard operating procedures; installing, operating, maintaining, and calibrating water quality sampling equipment; and entering data into computer spreadsheets or databases. The incumbent will perform all GS-6 duties, as well as use qPCR to test for DNA of bacteria and aquatic invasive species in water samples. Physical Demands: This position requires both field and laboratory work. Field work will usually be performed with a second person. The incumbent will also spend approximately 20% of the time performing computer work and maintaining/cleaning equipment. Working in various watercraft to collect natural resource data will be required of this position. Handling, securing, loading, launching, and navigating hand propelled watercraft in a variety of weather and water conditions is an expectation of the position. The incumbent will be expected to portage a canoe and carry field equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. Working Conditions: Work may include standing and walking for long periods of time; lifting of moderately heavy items, such as backpacks, canoes, boat anchors, etc.; exposure to harsh weather conditions such as temperature extremes, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight for long periods of time; occasional sedentary work. Staff may be hiking as much as 10 miles per day in various types of terrain while carrying backpacks, tools, and equipment. Excellent driving skills with experience handling small boat trailers are highly desired. Area Information Government Housing May Be Available Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is within the beautiful scenic resort area on the northeastern shores of Lake Michigan. Housing, medical facilities, shopping, churches, banks, day care, recreational activities, schools, and colleges are readily available within a 30 mile radius, and laundry is available within a 18-25 miles from park headquarters in Empire. High temperatures average between 70-80 degrees in the summer and low temperatures average between 10-20 degrees in winter. Government housing may be available for rent. Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-02/21/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: leading or coordinating field work in natural resource management, bacteriological water quality testing, or experience following water sampling and laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs) for processing water samples. Experience collecting field data and ensuring adequate quality control of data collected, providing a preliminary assessment and classification of the information. Evaluates observed conditions and problems and makes preliminary determinations on the case of problems noted. You must include start/end months and hours per week worked on your resume. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year (18 semester hours or equivalent) of graduate level study in of scientific or technical study, directly related to the position, such as biology, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, aquatic/wetland ecology, etc. You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts indicating degree earned and credit hours to qualify based on education. A copy of your official transcripts will be required before entrance on duty, if selected. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
