About the Position: This position is located with the Directorate of Emergency Services - Fire Protection & Prevention Division, Fort Campbell, KY. Fort Campbell lies on the Kentucky/Tennessee border between Hopkinsville, KY & Clarksville, TN about 45 miles NW of Nashville.

Duties

Receive assignments and general supervision from the Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention. Assign personnel to tasks in the Fire Prevention, Public Fire Safety Educational, Code Enforcement, Fire Investigation, Fire Alarm and Suppression System programs. Serve as the first-line supervisor for all fire inspectors assigned to the Fire Prevention Branch. Responsible for the Fire and Emergency Services segment of oversight concerning fire protection systems. Serve as a fire investigator.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • One year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • DOD certifications required for Supervisory Fire Inspector (Captain), - Fire Officer II, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector II, HAZMAT Incident Commander, and Airport Fire Fighter.
  • This position is designated by the Army as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Army civilian drug-testing program.
  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
  • The incumbent works a minimum of a 60 hour week.
  • Required to participate in a physical fitness program and pass an annual physical.
  • Incumbent is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week unless TDY or on leave.
  • This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.

Temporary promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years, and may be made permanent without further competition if the incumbent meets the eligibility criteria for specific appointment authorities in accordance with 9902(b)(2) of title 5, U.S.C. Position may be filled as a term appointment NTE 3 years, if the candidate is not a current permanent Army employee. Term appointments may be extended up to a maximum of six years. Specialized Experience is defined as: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service which includes: 1) Experience assisting in training programs for fire department personnel; 2) Experience participating with the Fire Chief in the exercise of supervisory personnel management responsibilities, advising staff regarding policies, procedures, and directives of higher-level management; 3) Experience detecting, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards; 4) Experience assessing patient's conditions to administer basic treatment; and 5) Experience conducting periodic and special inspections of principal high hazard buildings on and off post, such as shop facilities, computer facilities, child care facilities, Family Child Care (FCC) homes, schools, fuel storage and dispensing areas, aircraft hangars, engine testing areas in order to determine adequacy of life safety systems and implement appropriate regulations with respect to compliance with prescribed methods and codes and requirements peculiar to these types of facilities. Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job at the GS-09 grade level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone-no substitution of education for experience is permitted. In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess ire Officer II, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector II, HAZMAT Incident Commander, and Airport Fire Fighter. Maximum Entry Age (MEA) The MEA for Firefighters is 37. An employee originally hired into a covered position must be hired by the last day of the month he/she reaches 37. Maximum Reentry Age An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she is able to complete 20 years of covered service by his/her mandatory retirement age. The maximum re-entry age for the individual is calculated by determining the total amount of time he/she has served on a covered position and subtracting that from age 57 if a firefighter. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position. Waivers to Maximum Entry Age MEA may be waived, but only under specific circumstances and only if approved by the authorized entity: Waivers to MEA for firefighters must be approved by local Command.
