Duties

Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and are able to carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex radiographic procedures. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. The Radiology Interventional Diagnostic Technologist has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of the Interventional Radiology suite. This position closely works with technologists, radiologists, clinicians, department managers and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic/therapeutic exam results, and patient satisfaction. - Performs routine and complex Neurology, PV and general body diagnostic Interventional imaging by properly identifying the patient, maintaining proper IR safety precautions, sterile technique and properly assisting and instructing the patient both prior to, during and after the exam. - Operates all IR equipment including the IR computer console, post processing workstation, Siemens 3-D Leonardo workstation, c-arm and table controls, patient monitoring equipment and compatible contrast injectors. - Performs all interventional, diagnostic and therapeutic exams. - Maintains control of the Interventional Radiology area by coordinating, planning, organizing and executing the work to expedite workflow patterns within the department. - Coordinates the repair and installation of all special procedure equipment. - Performs clerical procedures for maintaining accurate records, diagnostic log, patient schedules, procedure log, and registering patients when necessary. - Performs complex neurology angiography (EFO's, carotid and vertebral stenting), peripheral and visceral angiography of the abdominal systems and extremities. - Prepares contrast materials used in exams performed during special procedures. - Performs other related duties as assigned. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: - Citizenship: Must be a Citizen of the United States. - English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) , and 7407(d). - CERTIFICATION: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT)(R) .- EDUCATION: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). GS-9 GRADE REQUIRMENTS: Experience: Must have at least 1 year of progressive experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-8) which demonstrates the clinical competencies directly related to the position? Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex imaging procedures beyond the full performance level, clinical instruction, and basic QM type duties within the program. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. GS-9 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition, you must demonstrate the following technical KSAs: 1) Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. 2) Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. 3) Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure. 4) Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. 5)Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions. 6) Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients. Preferred Experience: Interventional radiology, Angiography and OR References: VA Handbook 5005/77, Part II, Appendix G25, Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist Qualification Standard. Physical Requirements: The employee works and functions in the medical center in a safe manner, including infection control and the correct operation of equipment.
