The Air Conditioning Mechanic position is located within the VA Hudson Valley Healthcare System in Castle Point, New York or Montrose, New York. The Air Conditioning Mechanic is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing air conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation equipment in all areas of the medical center. and will be responsible for heating systems in centrally controlled systems.

Duties

Duties and responsibilities of this position include (but are not limited to): Installs and services electronic air cleaners; Installs all necessary piping and tubing for assigned systems and equipment and wiring and control circuits within the system; Uses refrigerants and refrigeration oils within the scope of work; Observes all safe trade practices and handles all tools and material in a safe manner; Takes part in the maintenance and repair of steam distribution systems, water treatment systems, medical and dental air, and vacuum systems.; Uses test equipment for troubleshooting such as gauge manifold, multi-voltage meters, vacuum pumps, charging cylinders, etc.; Uses schematics, blue prints and wiring diagrams; Utilizes correct application of PTR charts (pressure temperature relationship) in order to locate and repair faulty equipment; Utilizes principles of air-conditioning and refrigeration such as air distribution, heat transfer, component parts of systems, and automatic solid-state controls; Performs equipment tests, determines parts needed, and arranges for parts to be ordered; and Performs all other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday; 8:00am - 4:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Air Conditioning Mechanic/PD03513A Physical Requirements: Work is frequently carrying and setting up parts and equipment that weighs more than fifty (50) pounds. Hoists, holders and pulleys are operated when removing units such as large compressors, condensers and chillers. makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where the parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places; therefore, frequently stretching, bending and kneeling for long periods of time are required. In some areas, crawling is required to reach a piece of equipment or pump. All safety harnesses and equipment, including PPE must be worn when working is such areas where PPE is needed to protect the safety of the individual. Usually works inside but is occasionally required to work outside on top of tall buildings during periods of inclement weather, in drafty attic spaces and in cramped areas with low overheads. Uncomfortable facemasks and protective clothing may be occasionally worn when there is a possibility of exposure to hazards, such as toxic refrigerants when making emergency repairs. Employee is subject to cuts, burns, electrical shocks and respiratory ailments. Exposure to concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin and internal organs.
