Duties

Oversee the development of the annual natural resources work plan, develops five-year plans and makes adjustments as needed. Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate programs for endangered species (flora and fauna) conservation as required by the Endangered Species Act. Perform supervisory personnel management responsibilities. Prepare a variety of documents including correspondence, reports, briefing slides, and policy statements.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
• This position is designated by the Department of the Army as a Testing Designated Position TDP) under the Department of the Army civilian drug testing program.
• Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management.
• This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions, in the vicinity of unexploded ordnance and wildland fires, and falls under the hearing conservation program.
• May be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include overtime, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
• TDY travel is 10% of the time.
• This position requires you to pass a pre-placement medical and annual medical surveillance exam in accordance with Occupational Health requirements.
• This position requires the employee to be able to lift or carry heavy objects in excess of 50 lbs.
• A one-year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.

Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in forestry; or a related subject-matter field that included a total of at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours of course work was in forestry. The curriculum must have been sufficiently diversified to include courses in each of the following areas: Management of Renewable Resources -- study of the science and art of managing renewable resources to attain desired results. Forest Biology -- study of the classification, distribution, characteristics, and identification of forest vegetation, and the interrelationships of living organisms to the forest environment. Forest Resource Measurements and Inventory -- sampling, inventory, measurement, and analysis techniques as applied to a variety of forest resources. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in forestry, or at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours were in forestry. The requirements for diversification of the 24 semester hours in forestry are the same as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Basic Requirement for Wildlife Biologist GS-0486-12: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological science that included at least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; AND at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); AND at least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in organizing and/or leading field studies to conduct biological surveys for both Threatened and Endangered Species (TES) and non-TES species, and document existing ecological conditions at project sites, and experience in applying regulatory guidance coupled with quality control measures to identify concerns and implement measures that impact endangered wildlife; and/or developing or recommending short and long range forestry management plans concerning habitat and population. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
