About the Position: Performs a combination of maintenance, repair, fabricate, modification, equipment operation, Structural and Wildland fire apparatus, Airfield Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Crash Trucks, and emergency technical equipment repairs.

Duties

Repairs and services a variety of firefighting and emergency equipment such as pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, crash/rescue trucks, hazardous material response vehicles, mobile water supplier rescue fire fighting vehicles (ARFF). Repairs, rebuilds and/or modifies and completes initial disassembly inspection and diagnosis of Emergency Vehicle Equipment. Inspects, diagnoses, repairs and/or replaces components in drive trains, suspensions, fuel systems, electrical systems, air systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, and all other systems found on fire trucks and other emergency vehicle equipment. Performs complete tear down, measurement, modification, failure analysis of fire apparatus and emergency technical vehicles/equipment and/or components.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Position may require the employee to perform Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) up to 10% of the time.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a government issued credit card for temporary duty travel.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Fire Apparatus EVT III and the ARFF Vehicle EVT III certifications within three years of employment, recertify every 5 years and complete 30 hours of EVT continuing education annually.
  • This standard is considered eligible and qualified as an emergency vehicle technician and shall apply to personnel who are engaged in the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and testing of emergency response vehicles.

Frequently works on top of and under vehicles in cramped, awkward positions. Required to do strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing 60 plus pounds, and often lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers and with lifting devices, such as hoists, jacks, and cranes. WORKING CONDITIONS: Workplace is in the arctic climate of interior Alaska where roads and grounds are covered in snow and ice 7+ months of the year and temperatures drop below -50 degrees F, adding significant complexity and time required for all operations. Equipment with water must be protected from freezing. Equipment stored outside gets packed with snow and ice and must be thawed before work can begin. Climate makes towing NMC vehicles in/around the maintenance facility or on roadways more difficult and dangerous.
