Duties

Identify developmental and training needs of employees. Assume command of assigned fire crews until relieved by a senior fire officer. Determine the utilization of firefighters and equipment for combating hazardous material (HAZ/MAT) incidents and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) incidents.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program (DA Form 5019-R). The incumbent is required to sign DA Form 5019-R and pass urinalysis testing, as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
  • Rigorous, heavy physical effort is required in the frequent handling of objects such as cylinders and extinguishers weighing 45 lbs or more.
  • Employee must participate in a physical fitness program.
  • The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. The employee must possess and maintain a valid State Driver's license.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • The employee is required to work rotating shifts at 72 hours per week and 144 hours per pay period.
  • Obtain and maintain a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) background investigation is required.
  • TDY Travel up to 5% may be required.
  • his position requires the incumbent must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • Incumbent may be required to work overtime as the need arises.
  • Incumbent may be required to lift/carry personnel such as an adult male in emergency situations. Duties require full use of both arms, both legs and fingers to bend, turn, pull, crawl, kneel, and climb for all types of rescue operations, etc.
  • This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • This position is subject to an initial drug screening, and random testing thereafter. A negative drug test result must be received by human resources within 30 calendar days after the Entrance on Duty (i.e., start date).
  • Selectee’s inability to successfully pass or refusal to conduct the drug test may result in the job offer being withdrawn during the recruitment process or subsequently being removed from Federal service for failure to meet a condition of employment.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08). Selective Placement Factor: The incumbent must possess the following IFSAC or Pro-Board Certifications: Airport Firefighter, HAZMAT Incident Commander, Fire Officer II, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification (issued by state or National Registry). If the EMT certification/recertification is issued after 31 March 2015 by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), then the card will read as "EMT" You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Fire SuppressionHazardous Materials ResponseTeaching Others Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-08).
