The Laundry Machine Operator position is located at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center and performs varied combinations of tasks in one or more functional areas of the laundry process.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Preparing and loading carts of clean linen for delivery to wards, clinics, and other areas; loading carts according to established linen quotas. Handling telephone requests for additional linen and maintaining records of all such requests. Performing all duties in accordance with station policies, procedures, regulations, and standards applicable to the laundry section. Operating the flatwork spreader/feeder, ironer, folder, and stacker/conveyor; operating industrial dryers, a small piece folder, and garment tunnel finisher. Unloading industrial washers and operating lift stations, index switches, and rail sling systems. Sorting soiled linen by classification and degree of soil and follows all established procedures. Performing routine care and maintenance of machines and equipment (i.e., tightening nuts and bolts and/or greasing/oiling fittings and wheels); and inspects linens for damage, stained items, etc. Maintaining production counts and inventory records of all supplies. Following established safety and infection control procedures; keeping the assigned work area clean and free of debris. Performing other related duties as assigned. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Strength and stamina for doing heavy physical tasks for long periods, e. g., pulling wet laundry from washer, pushing heavy cans, and lifting bundles weighing over 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Moving heavy bags of soiled and clean linen overhead. Intermittent bending and twisting while lifting items out of buckets. Pushing linen into washer or dryers from buckets or sling bags. Stands and walks continuously on concrete floors. Laundries are very noisy and usually hot and humid. Constantly exp0sed to the possibility of bruises from moving carts or falls on wet floors in the washing area. A typical hospital laundry setting in the summer is high humidity. heat, odors, and congestion and infection possibilities. In the winter could be exposed to cold temperatures while unloading trucks.
