Duties

Pharmacy Technician (Outpatient): The ideal candidate should be a knowledgeable and motivated pharmacy technician with extensive experience in a community and/or hospital outpatient pharmacy setting. The candidate should be detail oriented and a problem solver with superior customer service and communication skills. The candidate should be familiar with the complex handling of investigational medications and have a basic knowledge of pharmaceuticals, medication storage requirements and pharmacy practice. As a Pharmacy Technician in the Clinical Center, your duties will include but are not limited to the following: Answering phone calls and in person contacts on questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy staff regarding policies and procedures, drug availability, delivery times, drug costs, prescription status, tracking of prescriptions, and other pharmacy related issues. Logging investigational drugs according to department policy. Determining when the pharmacist is to be immediately alerted to a therapeutic problem. Performing final verification of simple non-sterile compounds, prepackaging medication and documenting monthly inspections of pharmacy and clinics. Conducting controlled substance inventories. Maintaining inventory records and preparing and filling clinic/pharmacy order requests for controlled substances. Receiving and verifying drug deliveries. Coordinating activities of other pharmacy technicians of a lower grade, students, and residents assigned to the unit. Meeting regularly with staff to share information and to plan and schedule projects.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship requirement or proof of being a U.S. National must be met by closing date.

  • Moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions, e.g., exposure to contagious diseases or irritant chemicals.
  • Position is considered Emergency Essential. See "Additional Information" section below for additional details for this designation.
  • May be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, googles, gloves, or shields.
  • The incumbent frequently walks between offices in the Clinical Center and other buildings of the campus. The incumbent must be capable of spending most of the day on foot.
  • Dexterity is required for handling delicate machines and special drugs.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GS-06: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks:Performing bulk compounding of pharmaceutical prescriptions which may require making adjustments to amounts of ingredients and solution concentrations; performing pharmaceutical calculations; preparing medications for dispensing by packaging and labeling appropriately in accordance with pharmacy policies and limitations; and obtaining, counting or pouring/placing correct amounts of medications in appropriate storage container(s). You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
