Duties

Manages the Fire and Emergency Services (F and ES) programs at Fort George Meade. Submits annual emergency services budget requirements for projects, equipment acquisition, travel and training, and services contracts to the Directorate of Emergency Services (DES). Ensures that fire suppression, detection, and fire alarm systems on the installation are designed and installed in accordance with DOD Instructions, National Fire Protection Association Standards, and Army Regulations. Negotiates Fire and Emergency Services Mutual Aid Agreements for DES with several municipal and federal fire and emergency services organizations. Assumes control of firefighting and emergency activities while on duty. Investigates the origin and cause of all fires and prepares DOD fire incident reports as well as technical investigation reports in coordination with safety and law enforcement. Through subordinate supervisors, supervises technical and support employees. With approval of DES, responsible for the execution of administrative and personnel management functions related to the accomplishment of the assigned missions. Serves as Fire Department technical advisor to all Directorates, Activities, and Garrison Staffs, through the Director DES and/or for the Director DES. Manages the installation emergency communications center for F and ES that receives 9-1-1 calls for assistance and directs the dispatch of emergency equipment and personnel of the F and ES for the installation.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires a Secret security clearance.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires the incumbent to work one 24-hour shift each week.
  • This position is designated Mission Essential. During severe weather conditions or other emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate government vehicles.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • A one-year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • Must maintain the following DOD Firefighter Certifications: Fire Officer IV, Instructor II, Inspector II, Hazardous Material Operations, and Incident Commander.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position is subject to an initial drug screening, and random testing thereafter. A negative drug test result must be received by human resources within 30 calendar days after the Entrance on Duty (i.e., start date).
  • Selectee’s inability to successfully pass or refusal to conduct the drug test may result in the job offer being withdrawn during the recruitment process or subsequently being removed from Federal service for failure to meet a condition of employment.
