The Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) position is located within the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), Division of Intramural Research, Clinical Neuroscience Program. The mission of NINDS is to conduct, foster, coordinate, and guide research on the causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of neurological disorders and stroke.

Duties

Communicates with the multidisciplinary research team to ensure that patient management strategies are successful in meeting patient care and/or research needs. Functions as a certified nurse practitioner for a specified patient population, within the state where work is being performed, appropriately consulting and collaborating with the attending neurologist and/or other medical staff colleagues. Works with the healthcare team to provide patient and family counseling and health education to a diverse and complex patient population with consideration of the patient’s learning needs, learning readiness and impediments to the process. Collaborates with the patient, family and significant others in developing plans that consider and respect the patient’s cultural background, level of understanding, and available resources and support systems. Provides consultation to the healthcare team related to implementation and evaluation of specific protocols.

Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: In order to qualify for an Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner), GS-0610 position, you must have: A. A graduate or higher-level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position. NOTE: Degree from a Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools AND B. Passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN); AND C. A current, active, full and unrestricted license, or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to the mandatory license and education described above under Basic Qualifications, applicants must have at least one or more full years of professional nursing experience that is equivalent to the next lower grade level. In order to qualify for an Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner), GS-0610 position at the GS-13 level, you must have: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: predicts and analyzes trends in patient conditions and develops a patient management plan in response to the data obtained; serve as a patient advocate along with other health care professionals; provide monitoring of patients for possible adverse reactions to drugs or procedures that may require emergency treatment or revision of the prescribed regiment; and monitors and documents responses to therapies and communications findings with recommendations for appropriate interventions.
