The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Recreation Specialist performing assignments designated by the Facility Manager or Fitness Director to help achieve the mission of the Wright-Patterson Fitness Program.

Duties

Performs assignments as directed. Performs recurring assignments. Promotes, organizes, leads and schedules physical training at the unit and individual fitness level. With the concurrence of the Fitness Director or Facility Manager, identifies, plans, promotes and carries out special events. As directed by the supervisor or higher level specialist, plans and budgets for equipment and supplies required for conducting a fitness program. Monitors and maintains inventories on all fixed, pilferable and computer assets within the fitness center. Under the direction of the supervisor or higher level specialist, is responsible for successful accomplishment of all staff ancillary training, such as First Aid, CPR and continuing profession education (CPE) of the fitness staff.

  • This position meets the administrative exemption criteria for the Fair Labor Standards Act (5 CFR 551.206)
  • Work may require travel away from normal duty station on military and commercial aircraft

Qualifications

Experience requirements are described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Administrative and Management Positions. Due to the use of 120-day rosters, this period of experience may be completed within 120 days of the closing date of this announcement. BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Education Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- general recreation, or one of the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education. OR Specialized Experience (for positions above GS-5): Experience that demonstrated the ability to apply the principles of one or more specialty areas of recreation. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, or evaluating community, industrial, outdoor, institutional, or other recreational programs. Planning, establishing, or evaluating a recreational curriculum for junior college or higher academic levels. Instructing in the principles and techniques of recreational program planning and management. Serving in a leadership role in the programs and activities of local, regional, and/or national recreational organizations. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-07, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes knowledge of physical fitness programs which consist of exercising science, strength training, nutrition, weight loss, cardiovascular endurance, exercise requirement and results, other physical fitness parameters sufficient to develop individual group exercise and fitness programs. NOTE: Due to the use of 120-day rosters, this period of experience may be completed within 120 days of the closing date of this announcement. OR EDUCATION: master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. (NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.) OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience which may be used to meet total experience requirements.(NOTE: You must submit your transcripts.) FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-­grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-07 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-09 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. Due to the use of 120 day rosters, applicants within 120 days of completion of TIG requirements are encouraged to apply. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of mission and function of the Fitness Programs to competently and independently execute continuing fitness projects or programs through the proper application of the principles, concepts and techniques of fitness programs. Knowledge of the range of activities and services, of participant interests and needs, and of the methods and processes that enable the employee to plan and conduct a variety of fitness activities. Ability to meet and communicate effectively with people in a patron service environment in order to achieve the goals of the Fitness Program. Ability to read, interpret and apply DoD, Agency, Air force, Command and local policies and directives. Skills and ability to effectively manage the financial and equipment resources received and provided for the fitness program area. Ability to change program requirements within available resources and with minimum satisfied of quantity or quality or work; and the ability to establish program objectives or performance goals and assess progress toward their achievement. Ability to analyze and evaluate the needs and interests of customers. Knowledge of automation sufficient to support required program functions; a qualified typist is not required. Must obtain Cooper's Personal Trainer Certificate or from a nationally recognized source is required. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
