The purpose of this position is to perform nondestructive testing of aircraft structures, parts, components, and materials which require nondestructive testing by applying the full range of ultrasonic, eddy current, magnetic particle, fluorescent penetrants and radiographic inspection techniques in accordance with applicable technical orders, directives and standards.

Duties

- Operates and maintains portable and fixed magnetic particle testers, fluorescent penetrant test equipment, ultrasonic flaw detectors, eddy current test equipment, in radiographic equipment to interpret and evaluate indications revealed by test in terms of part serviceability. - Performs highly specialized resonance, pitch-catch impulse, pitch-cast swept, pulse echo, through transmission and mechanical impedance analysis ultrasonics methods to inspect advanced composite materials such as carbon/epoxy/syncore, carbon/epoxy/nomex, carbon/epoxy solid laminate glass/nomex and carbon/rohcell on the C-17 aircraft. - Performs Radiographic (X-RAY) work in accordance with applicable technical orders, AFOSH, Mil standards and local mandated safety directives. - Performs daily, weekly, monthly, annual scheduled maintenance to ensure proper systems operation. Ensure that test equipment, shop and work areas are clean and orderly and that materials and equipment are properly and safely stored. - Must keep shop supervisor informed of production status; notifies lab supervisor for assistance in evaluating abnormal defects for which no inspection procedures are available or do not exist, parts failure was contributed to faulty design or when unable to evaluate imperfections.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3700 - Metal Processing Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the Ability To Do the Work of a Nondestructive Tester Without More than Normal Supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Incumbent must have attended the Air Force Nondestructive Inspection Training Course or a commercially approved course which is approved on an individual basis of review by the AF Nondestructive Inspection Programs Office (verification must be in the form of a course completion certificate). Incumbent must be proficient in Fluorescent Penetrant, Magnetic Particle, Ultrasonics, Eddy Current, and Radiography testing methods. Ability to do the work of the position with little or minimal supervision. Ability to select and set-up/calibrate test equipment required to perform nondestructive test. Ability to interpret and evaluate discontinuities. Ability to maintain and document nondestructive inspection records. Knowledge of safety regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to work. Ability to follow instructions, interpret specifications, etc. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Must be physically active, able to walk, stand, stoop, crawl, kneel, climb, prolonged standing, moderate heavy lifting up to 40 pounds. Subject to eye strain when using backlight. Both hands, good eyesight, and color vision required. WORKING CONDITIONS: Performs work inside and outside, danger of eye injury, subject to injury by moving machinery, exposure to loud noises, fumes, solvents, chemicals, oils, and potential to electrical shock. Required to work off aircraft tail stands or high reach to perform some required inspections. Subject to possible radiation damage to body tissues. Wears radiation monitoring devices, standard safety and protective equipment. Subject to loud noises from jet engines or associated AGE equipment. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
