The Pathways Internship Program allows students to join VA in career positions that emphasize long-term training and development. The incumbent is assigned to the SCRIPT Service of the LTC Charles S. Kettles VA Medical Center, Ann Arbor, MI and will work primarily under the direction of the Strategic Planner. The selected candidate will onboard in the Spring (May/June) of 2024.

Duties

This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides managers a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Data Analysis (15%): The incumbent performs data analyses of a variety of data. The incumbent must be able to analyze the data after determining the data source, identify trends and provide recommendations. Information derived from these reviews are used to ascertain hospital priorities and establish a basis for future planning/program development of services. Service Level Interaction (15%): The incumbent will review operations of the Medical Center. This review generally involves determining the operations of different services and the coordination of several services at many levels of the Medical Center. Senior Management Assistance (10%): The student trainee will work closely with a variety of upper level executive managers and meet with key decision makers of the organization. The includes the Medical Center Director, Associate Director, Chief of Staff, Associate Director PCS and the Assistant Director. The student trainee will provide project focused assistance as requested. Committee/Board Responsibility (10%): Student will attend a broad variety of meetings, including Executive Leadership Council meetings and will provide staff assistance to the meeting. Student will track pending action items, maintain follow up, develop agenda and complete minutes. Projects (50%): An important portion of the student trainee pertains to the participation in projects with specific value to the organization. Projects should involve 50-60% of the students time during the internship period. Projects will either be assigned from an Executive Team member, a SCRIPT supervisor or may be based on the student trainee input. Student trainee will be responsible for project design and management and will present their findings for the purpose of improving medical center operations. Clerical/Administrative Support & Coordination Requirements: Provides clerical and administrative support to the unit. Customer Service: Meets the needs of customers while supporting the VA Medical Center mission. Consistently communicates and treats customers in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with customers constructively and appropriately. ADP Security: Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHA policy. Protects the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion. Follows applicable regulations, and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc., as set out in the computer access agreement that the employee signs. Work Schedule: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (Monday through Friday)

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 01/11/2024. Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled. You may qualify based on education and/or experience as described below: Basic Qualifications: Applicant must be in good academic standing with the college or university currently enrolled in at the time of appointment and upon request, students must demonstrate an overall Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) of 2.0 or above on a 4.0 scale as recorded on the official transcript. (Transcript Required) Grade Determinations GS-07: Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. OR Superior Academic Achievement: In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, such as that identified in Education below. Superior Academic Achievement is based on: (1) Class Standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR (2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR (3) Honor Society Membership - Applicants may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achsnatl.org/).
