The APRN is a Registered Nurse who has completed the necessary educational preparations in order to: engage in primary health care decision making; obtain advanced competencies and skills for assessing physical and psychosocial health/illness status of individuals, families and groups; promote health maintenance and protection against disease; and manage the care of patients/clients within the scope of preparation and accountability.

Duties

VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package: VA Nurse Total Rewards Within the scope of practice, the APRN is accountable for the provision of care/services to enrolled patients. These patients include those with poorly controlled chronic illnesses who benefit from care coordination. The APRN in collaboration with primary care physicians provides medical direction to the team and recommends adjustments to the treatment plan for the purpose of improving the patient's control of chronic illness. Incumbent serves as an agent of the supervising physician regarding prescriptive authority. Prescriptive authority will be delineated within the APRN's individual scope of practice. team. Function as an active member of the Gastroenterology Section for the management of general GI services in keeping with good clinical practice and standards of the Medicine Service. Primary focus of practice is the clinical management of health care for patients in the gastroenterology section by utilizing approved standards of care, procedures, methods and techniques, safety precautions and protocols in their application to the gastroenterology patient population in all settings. Manage and coordinate tests, labs, imaging, procedure, and consultations as needed. Perform histories and physicals on patients as needed. Promotes and participates in the delivery of patient and family health and gastroenterology education. Act as a liaison between appropriate subspecialty providers, case managers and primary care for patients in need of endoscopic procedures. Keeps abreast of latest trends, skills, procedures, and protocols relevant to the specialty and serves as a resource person for the medical center staff. Other duties as assigned and deemed necessary to meet the needs of the Medical Center. Administrative: As licensed independent practitioners, the APRN is authorized to write medical orders on patients assigned to the facility for care. Every order or prescription written by the APRN will be within the parameters of their scope of practice. All orders, progress notes, consultation requests, and history and physical examinations which are written by the APRN will clearly be identified as such in the electronic medical records. Maintain compliance with the Medical Staff bylaws and will complete all assigned clinical notes and encounters in the electronic medical records in a timely fashion. Additional Administrative duties may include a. Act as a resource for outpatient gastroenterology consults, assessing patient priority for evaluation scheduling. Monitors and maintains consult tracking. Maintaining gastroenterology database and monitors laboratory evaluations for the outpatient gastroenterology population. Arranges for gastroenterology procedures and interventions required by various specialty providers/ services for continuation of care by that provider or specialty service i.e., radiology, surgical, transplant services. Oversee scheduling of the outpatient gastroenterology clinics with resolution of scheduling conflicts. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Education (Nurse Practitioners). Must possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC/ACEN or CCNE. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Certification (Nurse Practitioners). A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. Note: The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected. Preferred Qualifications/Experience: Current Basic Cardiac Life Support Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level III - a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Work will require long periods of regular and recurring standing and walking (8 hours) with regular and recurring heavy lifting (35 lbs. and over) and positioning of patients while maintaining balance. Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, move body and extremities quickly, push and pull equipment, carry equipment and supplies (heavy 35 lbs. and over) without personal limitations or physical restrictions. Protracted periods of sitting with an assigned patient may be required. Physical endurance and physical tolerance are required for an 8-hour shift as assigned. These are essential functions of the position.
