About the Position: Position is located at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, the 2nd largest army base in the world. Fort Campbell lies on the Kentucky/Tennessee border between Hopkinsville and Clarksville, only 40 miles NW of Nashville. Although the base is considered part of Kentucky, most employees reside in Clarksville, Tennessee.

Duties

Serve as a senior Forestry Technician assisting professional forestry personnel in the technical planning and coordination of a variety of forest management activities. Monitor ongoing forestry contract operations to insure compliance with contract specifications. Maintain biodiversity and ecosystem management, production of commercial forest products and provide critical plant and animal habitat while providing optimum training areas that meet the requirements of the military mission. Respond to wildfires when reported, evaluates fire behavior when on the scene, determines and implements a plan of action to control or suppress the fire. Work on a fire team in an effort to complete fire suppression and prescribed burning requirements.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

  • Incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License.
  • Position requires a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 180 days of employment.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
  • This position requires a National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) firefighter pre-employment and annual physical.

OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. OR Specialized Experience: GS-08: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Conducting selective tree marking and timber volume estimation; 2) Assisting in fire management programs such as prescribed burns and fire suppression or; 3) Determining the nature of the resources needed to include personnel, equipment, and services required to conduct forest/fire management activities. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages. OR Specialized Experience: GS-09: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Conducting selective tree marking and timber volume estimation; 2) Directing other forest technicians and equipment operators on a fire team in an effort to complete fire suppression and prescribed burning and; 3) Determining the nature of the resources needed to include personnel, equipment, and services required to conduct forest/fire management activities. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
