About the Position: Position located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Director for Surgery, Dept of General Surgery in Bethesda, MD. Duty Hours are Monday-Friday 0730-1600. Parking at Walter Reed is very limited, alternate commuting is strongly suggested.

Duties

Responsible for analytical, administrative, management, operational, and educational duties. Perform duties to ensure effective administrative processes. Monitor and analyze plans, making necessary updates to ensure compliance with objective and guidelines. Provide guidance regarding policies and procedures. Oversee student activity duty training function. Ensure Medical Student Clerkship Coordinator maintains communication with all parties regarding clerkship issues. Ensure compliance with legal and military personnel procedures as directed by higher authority. Provide analysis and presentations to convey the program, operation, and activities of the Department. Participate in the annual Joint Service Graduate Medical Education Selection Board (JSGMESB). Develop and implement operational adjustments to improve internal administrative procedures. Ensure timecard compliance for residents in the program. Manage travel for residents in the program. Setup for the annual surgery in-service examination. Assists the program director in managing the residency program. Approval authority for leave for military residents. Tracking and managing residents schedules. Confirming residents are in compliance with credentialing requirements.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation or exemption must be provided upon hire).

Qualifications

Position is a GS-09 level with promotion potential to a GS-11 level and may be filled at level GS-09 or GS-11. If selected at the GS-09 level; noncompetitive promotion to the next grade level is authorized; pending time in grade requirements and demonstrated ability to perform at the next higher/target level grade duties. OR Education: Master's degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Medical Administration, Healthcare Administration, or Medical Education. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07). GS-11 Requirements: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes working within a residency program within a Medical Treatment Facility (MTF); coordinating all training and clinical training rotations for residents; and utilizing a variety of databases to prepare reports for leadership on the GME program.
