The ideal candidate will have a state license and preferably possess Pediatric Board Certification or be Board Certification eligible and/or have specialty certifications from organizations such as the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) or Neuro-Developmental Treatment Association (NDTA).

Duties

As an Occupational Therapist (Pediatrics), your duties include, but are not limited to the following: Developing mechanisms and tools for implementation of new state-of-the art treatment approaches and evaluate the impact of these approaches from a quality of life and research perspective. Serving as the principal advisor and resource person to the Occupational Therapy Section regarding all clinical matters related to the evaluation and treatment of pediatric patients including those under 2 years of age and in the Pediatric ICU (PICU). Assisting in attaining services through an early intervention/school-based program and counsel parents regarding their child's rights to such services. Designing, developing and implementing policies and procedures related to pediatric rehabilitation services which affect the section, department and institutes. Initiating and identifying areas of pediatric rehabilitation research and formulate a viable research proposal through the scientific peer review process and monitor its progress until completion. Providing consultation and serve as a primary resource to other local, state, federal, national and international agencies, organizations, and institutions on matters pertaining to pediatric occupational therapy. Evaluating and treating physical disabilities adult populations in addition to pediatric responsibilities.

  • The work requires moderately heavy physical exertion on a regular and recurring basis such as assisting a paralyzed person in self-care transfer activities (wheelchair to bed, toilet, tub, automobile).
  • The work requires providing substantial support to individuals in ambulation therapy.
  • The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated with occasional exposure to moderate risks or discomforts in clinical environments (such as patient units).
  • Therapists are exposed to patients with rare diseases and drug resistant organisms.
  • Applicants must have passed the national examination administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (external link) (NBCOT).
  • If selected, you must pass a pre-employment medical examination, provide evidence of immunization, and be free from communicable diseases.
  • This position may require weekend and holiday hours.

Qualifications

To qualify for a Occupational Therapist (Pediatrics), GS-0631 you must: A. Possess a graduate or higher level degree that included: An occupational therapy curriculum approved by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) or a professional accrediting organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained; OR B. A bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy and a substantial record of experience and achievement that demonstrates competence in the occupational therapy field. Individuals who qualify based on this option will be subject to a comprehensive evaluation of both their education and experience prior to final appointment. AND Certification: Applicants must have passed the national examination administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify for the GS-12 grade level: In addition, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: assessing the actual and probable physical and psychosocial condition of pediatric patients; assisting in developing and implementing policies and procedures related to pediatric rehabilitation services; evaluating and treating patients in a clinical setting for both adult and pediatric populations; using occupational therapy interventions consisting of but not limited to the following: edema management, splint fabrication, developmental treatment including pediatric equipment, physical disabilities and psychosocial treatment, pediatric and adult ICU care, and conducting outcome measure administration and data analysis. You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
