Duties

The duty stations for the parks are: Golden Gate National Recreation Area (San Francisco, CA) Redwood National Park (Crescent City, CA & Orick, CA) Whiskeytown National Recreation Area (Whiskeytown, CA) Point Reyes National Seashore (Point Reyes Station, CA) Haleakala National Park (Kula, HI) Duties of the position: Assisting in the maintenance and construction of graded and paved trails General trail maintenance such as clearing of drainage features, out sloping trail tread, logging and brushing trails, bridge repair and/or construction. Remove windfalls, rockslides, surface outcroppings and debris from trails. Routine painting, rough carpentry, raking of trail tread. Operate power, hand and stationary tools such as chain saws, brush cutters, pulaskis, shovels and mcleods. Transporting construction materials. Shaping of stone and construction and maintenance of dry and wet multi and single coursed walls. Physical Demands: Heavy physical exertion is frequently required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. Ability to frequently walk up to 20 miles daily; and must not have potential emergency medical problems that could complicate work in remote areas for extended periods of time. Working Conditions: Ability to live and work effectively in isolated backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people. Some location may have you live and work out-of-doors on projects including mountainous terrain up to 14,000 feet in elevation in all extremes of weather. Trail work is dusty and hazardous conditions may exist, and working around machinery.

Qualifications

Have the ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker (Trails) without more than normal supervision. (Screen out). Work experience demonstrates doing work such as maintenance worker tasks on a trail crew or group responsible for carrying out work on trails; constructed rock walls, water bars, and retainer bars; used chainsaws to cut wood or limb trees; and have used a jackhammer.
