These positions are located on a USDA Forest Service Unit within the Southwestern Region, Region 3. The primary responsibility of this position is to serve as the Assistant Regional Fire Director, Cooperative Fire, All-Hazards & Prevention with obligations for Region-wide activities in cooperative fire protection programs. Duties

Establishes operational liaison contact with federal, state, local, and voluntary (non-governmental) agencies and organizations, as well as international firefighting and other disaster-related organizations. Advises on legal and technical compliance with the provisions and criteria of the Stafford Act and Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) Program. During critical all-hazard situations, as delegated, establishes allocation priorities for all firefighting resources. Identifies and secures wildland fire and other disaster-related specialists in forestry and natural resources required to carry forth USAID's program of assistance in disaster preparedness and relief. Monitors the actual all-hazard situation and informs the FMOs and/or Forest Supervisors of critical fire situations. Responsible for the day-to-day coordination with Federal, State, Tribal, local government as well as the close coordination between National Forests.

  • Minimum of 90 days of wildland firefighting experience is required.
  • Willing to live/work in remote locations (volatile/unpredictable).
  • Some Fire positions may have Conditions of Employment such as: a valid state driver's license; a commercial driver's license (CDL); pre-appointment and random drug testing; or a physical or medical examination.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. Basic Requirement: GS-0401: Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resources management, chemistry, or related discipline appropriate to the position being filled. -OR- Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below. Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-12: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as: Coordinated the development of short and long-range fire management program plans and fire management activities; participated in the development, utilization, and integration of forest fire management resources to accomplish program targets; evaluated and analyzed current fire program levels to make recommendations to meet changing conditions within the limits of current or anticipated funding; coordinated the involvement of fire management input into the development of land management plans and analyses. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Selective Placement Factors A minimum 90 days experience performing on-the-line (Primary/Rigorous) wildland fire suppression duties as a member of an organized fire suppression crew or comparable unit that utilized knowledge of wildland fire suppression, containment or control techniques and practices under various conditions.
