Duties

Duties described are at the target grade, GS-07. Coordinates and directs the daily operations for an information center including the handling of daily receipts, sales, and personnel. Troubleshoots and resolves any problems associated with the visitor centers, personnel, equipment, or sales. Serves as Collection Officer for the unit, responsible for accounting, balancing, reconciling, and accurate record keeping of the visitor center funds. Provides visitors with detailed information in the areas of various permits and pass requirements, trip planning, local area information, ecological, and wilderness information. Plans, creates, and provides presentations for the interpretive displays regarding forest management, ecology, and natural and cultural history that will be displayed in kiosks throughout the visitor centers. Researches, develops, revises and updates educational, recreational guides, pamphlets, fact sheets, brochures, newspaper articles, trail signage, kiosk, boards, and interpretive displays. Assists in environmental programs and wilderness education programs and presents this information to various groups, adjusting the message for intended audience as requested. Performs technical and administrative supervision of Forest Service and/or non-Forest Service employees working in the Visitor Center Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-05: One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level defined as one or more of the following: Greeting visitors, responding to visitor inquiries, and accounting for collected monies using computer programs and records; Planning and presenting interpretive talks and programs for visitors, local schools, and other groups; OR Performing clerical duties, including mail and package delivery, assisted with scheduling for conference rooms, and operated audio/visual equipment. OR A bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree; OR A combination of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. For the GS-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level defined as two or more of the following: Serving as a collection officer for the sale of maps, permits, or passes and accounting for inventory, supplies and monies collected; Answering phones and greeting visitors; OR Arranging informational interpretive displays and providing information to the public. For the GS-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level defined as two or more of the following: Serving as the point of contact for the dissemination of public information of a specific work program for a unit; Producing brochures, promotional materials, website and social media content, news releases, and/or newsletters used in support of a public information program; Developing curriculum, materials, and event planning for interpretive and conservation education programs; OR Serving as a point of contact for the public for the sale of items such as books, maps, t-shirts, permits, passes or tickets and accounted for inventory, supplies and monies collected as part of an interpretive and conservation education program. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
