Duties

Assigns employees instructions, demonstrates proper work methods, and ensures that equipment, materials, tools, and/or supplies are available. Distributes and balances workload, checks work in progress and examines completed work for compliance with supervisor's instructions regarding sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines. Advises employees regarding procedures, policies, written instructions and keep them abreast of changes in policies and procedures when applicable. Provides information on potential performance problems, recommends workers for additional training, approves leave, and resolves simple informal complaints. Qualifications

To qualify for a Materials Handler Leader, your resume and supporting documentation must support: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Ability to Lead (SOE): Instructs other workers on less complex work methods; refers to manuals as a means in answering questions related to the duties and responsibilities of the position; and adheres to all safety standards. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: Same as work led. Required to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods. Must bend, stoop, and work in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. Uses some effort in operating hand and foot controls if operating materials handling equipment. Lifts and carries items that weigh up to 60 pounds and/or maneuvers, pushes, or slides items for proper positioning. Heavier items are moved with weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. Working Conditions: Same as work led. Work is performed insane and/or outside in areas that may be hot, damp, cold, drafty, or poorly lighted. Exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock or mechanized conveyor systems. In addition, may also be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, and solvents, and to high noise levels in mechanized work areas. When working with hazardous materials, may be subject to exposure from radiation, toxins, explosive hazards, or chemical fumes. Safety and Health Requirements: Employee is required to wear safety clothing and equipment include, but are not limited to the following: eye, respiratory, and foot protection and protective clothing such as gloves, apron, and coveralls. Other types may be required as deemed necessary by authorized management officials. If employee works near or around noise hazardous areas, machinery, or equipment, the employee will be required to wear approved hearing protective devices and an audiometric test will be conducted, as necessary.
