About the Position: Serves as a Mobile Equipment Metal Mechanic for the Logistics Readiness Center - Fort Wainwright, which provides full spectrum logistics support to ensure warfighters are properly sustained to fight and win the nation's wars. Fairbanks, AK is host to many different cultures, unique shopping and dining, and sporting activities such as fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, and skiing. Population is 87,000. Winter brings consistent snow conditions from November through March.

Duties

Performs paint and body work on commercial vehicles and tactical trucks of 1/4 to 20-ton capacity, and other general purpose vehicles undergoing Field-level repairs. Performs woodworking tasks such as fabricating shipping crates, minor furniture repair, and staining and re-decking trailers. Removes, repairs, and/or replaces damaged fenders, hoods, trunks, doors, bumpers, grilles, and other metal component parts on different types of bodies. Designs, fabricates, and installs equipment such as fuel tanks and driver enclosures for rough terrain forklifts and similar vehicles. Performs repair of fiberglass equipment such as aircraft skis and ahkio sleds, makes molds and fabricates parts of plastic and fiberglass, as required. Paints or spot paints vehicles, with responsibility for proper preparation of surfaces and mixing of paint. Ensures that anti-silicone and other additives are mixed into paint, as required.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Mobile Equipment Metal Mechanic~ without more than normal supervision. Duties include performing common Mobile Equipment Metal Mechanic tasks such as aligning fenders, radiators, and hood with the frame and body of vehicles and associated parts for the activity; removing, cutting and installing automotive glass; I know the purpose and properties of primer, paint, fiberglass material, including the handling techniques and the tools required to install and apply them. I possess a general knowledge of carpentry to include replacing broken wooden parts, cutting to size, and drilling bolt holes, and completing re-decking of cargo trailers. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)Ability to Use Hand Tools, Power Tools, etc., for Metal WorkDexterity (Assembly Disassembly Reassembly etc)Knowledge of Equipment, Structure, Materials, etc. (includes constructing repair, and forging)Layout and Pattern Development (includes Geometric Projection and Triangulation) PHYSICAL EFFORT: Mechanics perform frequent lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying and handling of objects weighing 35 to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 75 pounds. The work requires prolonged standing, stooping, kneeling, bending and climbing. At this level, mechanics also frequently must reach in hard-to-get-at places and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Work may be performed in an overhead position, as well as, on vertical and horizontal planes. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is usually performed on concrete floors in a shop area around machinery. Mechanics are exposed to dirt, dust, grease, odors, smoke, gases, and high noise levels. Sanding, grinding or welding duties require the wearing of goggles, respirator, welding mask, apron or gloves. The Mobile Equipment Metal Mechanic is exposed to possible burns, eye injury from infrared and ultra violet rays, and cuts, bruises, abrasions, and electric shock. Worker performs tasks in lighted, heated, and ventilated shop areas; frequently exposed to eye, skin, nose, and lung irritations from glue, bonding chemical vapors, caustic cleaning materials; airborne sawdust and fiberglass particles; subject to injury from splinters, cuts, bruises, flying wood particles, abrasions from handling rough fiberglass and unfinished wood, punctures from staples and fasteners, shocks from electrical equipment, and the possibility of serious injury such as loss of fingers from accidents while operating woodworking machines. Frequently exposed to loud noises while operating woodworking machinery. To minimize or eliminate the effects of some of these conditions, the worker is required to wear respiratory safety devices and other protective apparel, such as, gloves, aprons, safety glasses or face mask, and ear protectors. These protective devices may be restrictive and uncomfortable and may have to be worn for long periods of time. Worker uses machine guards and follows numerous safety practices in operating machines and using tools and equipment.
