The Engineering and Technology Directorate (ETD) Mechanical Systems Branch at Wallops Flight Facility is seeking a highly motivated and skilled candidate to serve as a Mechanical Technician. You will design, fabricate, assemble, and test flight vehicle structures, subsystems, components, and ground support equipment for suborbital and special orbital aerospace projects, including providing manufacturing services, processes and techniques in both subtractive and additive applications.

Duties

Duties described below are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee. Serve as a mechanical technician supporting the design, fabrication, procedure development, and test of advanced equipment, including large multi-functional structures, systems or vehicles that involve new concepts and new or varied problems. Act as a technical specialist on the procedures, methods, and techniques used for fabrication, assembly, and testing. Serve as an advisor to manufacturers, engineers, management, related organizations, or contractor personnel, giving authoritative advice relative to design, fabrication, and testing. Consult with management and project personnel in supporting technical requirements and criteria for the development of facilities, systems, equipment, or hardware. Serve as lab manager responsible for managing tooling, machine maintenance, machine operations, test equipment, and maintaining a safe lab environment. Work with customers, test leads as well as additive and subtractive design leads. Operate traditional and specialized machine shop equipment including mills, lathes, presses, and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) manufacturing. Serve as the operator and processor of a direct metal laser sintering additive manufacturing machine. Provide expertise in the identification and resolution of design deficiencies and implementation of optimal configurations and testing, including techniques and application of additive and subtractive manufacturing processes. Qualifications

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. To qualify for GS-11, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 level in the Federal service: Providing technical support for the design, fabrication, assembly, and/or testing of aerospace or mechanical structures (e.g. flight systems/structures, mechanisms, ground support equipment, and/or associated hardware); Working with other technicians or engineers to assist with additive and/or subtractive manufacturing processes for the development of aerospace or mechanical systems/subsystems, identifying and documenting design deficiencies; Assisting with preventive and/or corrective maintenance on manufacturing machines to ensure equipment is in reliable and operational condition for maintaining a safe lab environment. To qualify for GS-12, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service: Performing design, fabrication, assembly, and/or testing of aerospace or mechanical structures (e.g. flight systems/structures, mechanisms, ground support equipment, and/or associated hardware); Applying additive and/or subtractive manufacturing techniques or processes for the development of aerospace or mechanical systems/subsystems, implementing testing to identify and resolve design deficiencies; Performing machine maintenance, inspecting physical conditions of equipment, components, or facilities to ensure a safe lab environment.
