About the Position: This position is located with the Directorate of Public Works. Trades include High Voltage Electrician, Water/Wastewater Systems Mechanic, Electrician, Industrial Equipment Maintenance Mechanic, Pest Controller, Maintenance Mechanic, and Utility labor work.

Duties

Serve as a Lineman (High Voltage Electrician) with the added responsibility of performing specialized work associated with installing, maintaining, trouble-shooting, repairing, and calibrating electronic equipment. Serve as an Electrician engaged in installing, modifying, repairing, troubleshooting (tracing and locating defects), loading, and testing new and existing electrical lines,, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls and equipment Serve as an Electrician engaged in installing, modifying, repairing, troubleshooting (tracing and locating defects), loading, and testing new and existing electrical lines,, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls and equipment Serve as a journeyman Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic in performing the full range of work involved in the installation, relocation, repair, overhaul, maintenance, and servicing of industrial and domestic reach-in and walk-in refrigerators. Serve as a journeyman Boiler Plant equipment mechanic who installs, relocates, maintains, repairs, overhauls, modifies tests and inspects a variety of types and sizes of heating equipment, high and low pressure steam and hot water boilers. Perform the full range of tasks associated with the journeyman level Water/Wastewater Systems Mechanic. Maintain and repair installation water supply, distribution and treatment plant, equipment and systems. Control or eradicate a wide variety of pests some of which are not easily identified or located. Assess, plan, and schedule work of the distribution power system, the Water Plant and Wastewater Treatment Plant, Electrician work, Industrial Equipment Maintenance Mechanic work, Maintenance Mechanic work, and Pest Control work. Check work while in progress and upon completion to determine whether instructions, procedures and deadlines have been met and reports on status and progress of work.

  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • Incumbent is required to appropriately obtain and maintain State of New Mexico Level 2 and 3 Certification for water supply and wastewater treatment.
  • This position require to obtain and maintain a Federal/State Certification IAW Army Regulation (AR) 200-1, Chap. 5-4, and Department of Defense (DoD) Pest Management Plan, which includes DoDI 4150.7, and DoD certification standards.
  • This position required use of protective clothing or equipment, as authorized by WSMR Safety Office.

They crouch, stand, kneel, and stoop while installing, repairing, or testing electrical equipment in confined spaces. Workers work above ground from aerial bucket trucks and poles, at ground level, and in trenches, or manholes. Work requires bending, stooping, climbing, and standing for long periods. Coordination of eyes, hands, legs, and body is needed in installing, repairing, and testing electrical equipment in confined spaces such as manholes and overhead structures. The work requires frequent climbing, reaching, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, stretching, and walking. Some of the work is performed from ladder scaffolds, which require overhead work in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions. Movement is considerable when nailing, mortaring, grouting, painting, and using such tools as handsaws, trowels, paint brushes, and planers. There is frequent lifting and carrying of items that weigh 50-100 pounds. Some of the work requires that the employee handle, with the use of a hand truck, items weighing up to 300 pounds. Working Conditions: Work indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Subject to falls, cuts, burns, bruises, broken bones, or other serious injury. Subject to extremes of weather including dust, wind, heat, rain, freezing temperatures, et cetra. May occasionally work at heights over 100 feet, which are compensated by hazard duty pay. There is danger of falling from scaffolds, ladders, lowers up to 100 feet tall, and danger from flying splinters, chops, ceramics, glass, et cetera. There is frequent exposure to noise from various hand power tools, Work is done in areas that vary from "clean rooms" to areas that are noisy, dirty, and smoky. There is the possibility of exposure to fumes, infrared and ultraviolet radiation, heat, flying sparks, the glare of torches, and heated materials, the possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, as well as discomfort when wearing protective clothing, gloves, flash shield, or eye goggles. Some work exposes the worker to floor and deck surfaces, which are sometimes uneven, oily, and slippery. Subject to emergency call back after normal duty hours and on weekends and scheduled overtime requirements which are compensated by premium pay. May require use of protective clothing or equipment as authorized by the WSMR Safety Office. Requires the possession of a valid driver's license to perform incidental driving to and from actual work sites. Requires attendance and completion of various vehicle-driving courses.
