This position is located in the INTERMOUNTAIN REGION for the SALMON AND CHALLIS NATIONAL FORESTS MIDDLE FORK RANGER DISTRICT duty location CHALLIS CUSTER ID. The incumbent is responsible for inventory, evaluation, and advice on heritage and cultural resource management, including determination of effects of projects on cultural resources and recommended mitigation.

Duties

Provide advice on identification and management of Heritage and Cultural Resources in relation to compliance with Federal historic preservation laws. Provide heritage and cultural resource management orientation to Agency personnel on statutes, regulations, and purpose of work to be performed. Prepare pre-field work (i.e. contextual history, maps, inventory needs, and records) relative to inventory, salvage, and interpretation of heritage and cultural resource areas. Develop archeological data collection strategies (i.e., create forms and define required data sets) and monitors the progress of lower grade employee documentation of resource and survey data, and evaluate the outcome. Independently prepare and direct co-workers and/or contractors in the preparation of final cultural resource documents, including but not limited to archeological inventory reports, cultural resource records, and electronic datasets. Review cultural resource documents produced by other Federal agencies, contractors, partners, and other organizations to ensure that the documents comply with Federal standards. Identify appropriate cultural resources and write Determination of Eligibility documents for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Enter archeological site data from inventory, monitoring, condition assessments, and treatment activities into the Natural Resource Management Heritage Database (NRM Heritage) or similar database Direct archeological laboratory and collections activities such as artifact identification, sorting, bagging, numbering, and identification

Qualifications

Provide course descriptions as necessary. Basic Requirement: GS-0193: Education Degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of archeology. Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa. Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development. Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques. Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work.and Six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying; and Archeological field school. Related Curriculum: degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A.1 (including archeological field school). or Combination of Education and Experience College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. or Experience Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project. In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below. Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-09: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Led field crews in completing archeological field inventories and conducting recording of archeological sites (e.g., creation of field notes, narrative sections, sketch maps, location maps, artifact sketches, artifact field catalogs, rock art records, photo documentation, and photographic logs); Followed inventory intensity strategies and adapted ground searches as determined by specific project requirements i.e., terrain, vegetation cover, and time frames; Researched historical documents, archeological reports, maps and aerial photos. Prepared Cultural Resource Inventory reports that captured environmental and cultural backgrounds, methodologies, and findings; Used geographic information systems (GIS) software to produce maps and transfer spatial data to and from global positioning system (GPS) units. Entered archeological site data from inventory, monitoring, condition assessments, and treatment activities into the Natural Resource Management Heritage Database (NRM Heritage) or similar database. Reviewed work in progress to ensure compliance in all aspects of cultural policies and standards; Monitored implementation projects. OR: Two (2) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or have received a master's or equivalent graduate degree in archaeology or directly related coursework. OR: A combination of graduate level education (beyond 18 semester hours) and specialized experience that is directly related to this position that together meets the qualification requirements for this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.
