This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Works as a Physical Scientist with the Environmental Division of the Directorate of Public Works.

Duties

Professional knowledge of established scientific methods and techniques of toxic substances management, including asbestos, lead-based paint, mold, and radon Collect data and samples for analysis. Conducts statistical analysis and evaluation of data and prepares reports. Conduct special studies, sampling, investigations, and inspections to determine root causes and develop mitigation plans. Consult with and advise personnel on how to best achieve the goals and objectives of the program.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires that the employee occasionally travel away from the normal duty station up to 10% of the time.
  • May be required to wear and/or use protective clothing and equipment in accordance with established health and safety regulations.
  • Must possess or obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license, and any installation, DOD and/or Federal license or certification required for vehicle operated.
  • May be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include overtime, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • This position may require the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions.
  • May be required to serve a one-year probationary period.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Physical Scientist: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to one of the majors, as shown in A above, that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: experience preforming work related to managing and conserving wildlife resources by planning all aspects of the program and providing technical expertise and advise to other in involved in similar work or affected by the effort of this position; the development, production, conservation and utilization of the natural resources of forests and associated lands; inventory, planning, evaluation, and management of resources such as timber, soil, land, water, wildlife and fish habitat, minerals, forage and outdoor recreation; and the evaluation, management and protections of natural resources. This definition of specialized experience is typical work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
