Duties

Unclassified Set of Duties: Provide executive leadership in managing, directing, coordinating, overseeing, and evaluating all Division of Viral Diseases scientific and programmatic work. This includes providing leadership and vision to conceive, organize, and direct applied and basic research for viral vaccine preventable diseases, other enteric viruses, and cytomegalovirus and support for programs to prevent and control these viruses domestic and international. Represent the Division of Viral Diseases in dealing with and negotiating with individuals representing other components of CDC, HHS, other federal agencies, state and local public health departments, foreign ministries of health, national and international health organizations, non-profit organizations, public interest groups and industry. Responsible for providing leadership, direction, and oversight for the work of, and staff assigned to, the Division of Viral Diseases through subordinate supervisors and evaluating their performance. Advises staff about policies, procedures, and directives from higher level management. Ensures equity among unit performance standards and ratings completed by subordinate supervisors. Provide support to the NCIRD Director, CDC Director, HHS Secretary, Assistant Secretary for Preparedness, National Security Council, and other federal agencies related to detection, diagnosis and prevention issues of the diseases and viruses for which the Division of Viral Diseases has responsibility, including polio, measles, mumps, rubella, rotavirus, varicella, zoster, and norovirus. Serves as a principal national spokesperson on viral disease issues. Oversee technical and financial support provided to viral disease control programs domestic and abroad, epidemiology and surveillance activities, laboratory operations, policy coordination, communications, and business operations.

Qualifications

Desired Experience: Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include providing leadership in developing and executing a national program to prevent, detect and respond to viral enteric infections, viral vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks, and outbreaks of unknown origin in the United States and abroad. Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the rules, regulations, and policies governing federal human resources, financial, procurement, and operational practices Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate goals and objectives to a range of audiences Experience providing support and guidance to senior leaders Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills Supervisory experience

Education

Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Agency education requirements: An MD or Ph.D. in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position is required.
