You will serve as a MUSEUM TECHNICIAN (History) with the Collection Management Section, Curator Branch, Collection Management Division of the Naval History and Heritage Command which is located at the Defense Supply Center in Richmond, VA. The Curator Branch is responsible for the management of Navy properties of historical and inspirational value.

Duties

At the GS-6 level you will perform developmental duties, as assigned. At the Full Performance Level (GS-7) you will perform the duties listed below: You will perform a variety of technical duties to support Museum Specialists You will receipt and unpack collection or objects verifying documentation and shipping records You will photograph or mark artifacts and prepare collections or artifacts for storage You will assist higher level personnel in research to identify artifacts You will answer general inquires regarding historical properties in storage You will perform routine research in the Department of the Navy Heritage Asset Management Database You will assist in conducting inventories of the artifact collection You will execute artifact location and record updates

Requirements

  • You must obtain and maintain a Forklift certification within the timelines prescribed by the Command

Qualifications

To qualify at the GS-7 Level your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-06 or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing duties to include; 1) Applying museum collection management practices that include inventory, cataloging, preserving, and storage of artifacts; 2) Utilizing a collection management database to retrieve artifact information, create digital images, and maintain archival records; and 3) Following oral and written instructions; 4) Communicating information related to museum operations, collections, artifacts, World, US (American), and/or US Naval history. You may also qualify using education to substitute for specialized experience. See the "Education: section of this announcement for details. To qualify at the GS-6 Level your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-05 or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing historical museum or historical research duties which include one or more of the following: 1) Cataloging and inventory of artifacts; 2) Storing and housing of artifacts; 3) Performing Research Assistant duties supporting Historians or Museum Curators There is no educational substitution for experience at the GS-6 level. Education

For the GS-7 level, In lieu of general/specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience if you possess:
One full academic year of related graduate level education. Related fields of study include art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position of Museum Technician (History).
OR
Have completed a bachelor's degree program in a related field of study with Superior Academic Achievement. Related fields of study include art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position of Museum Technician (History).
