Primary purpose: To serve/Archivist in a developmental capacity/Research Division, Air Historical Research Agency (AFHRA). This position will prepare/arrange/preserve/scan/maintain historical records, research archival retention and distribution to users. This is a developmental position. All training must be completed and regulatory requirements met prior to promotion.

Duties

GS09: In a Developmental Capacity: Performs assignments in archival research. Responds to requests for historical information received from multiple official and unofficial sources. In a Developmental Capacity: Support AFHRA's historical program. Performs archival conservation and preservation work for the historic collections at AFHRA. In a Developmental Capacity: Complete special projects as assigned. Prepares summaries of pertinent information for application to current and future assignments. GS11: Performs advanced professional archival research and reference services. Supports AFHRA's emblem program, applying the standards set forth in AFI 84-105. Completes special projects as assigned. Performs archival conservation and preservation work for the historic collections at AFHRA

  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
  • Utilizes a variety of office automation equipment to produce a variety of documents and reports.
  • This is a designated drug testing position. Incumbent is subject to random drug testing.

  • This is a Mission Essential (ME) position performing a Mission Critical Function (MCF) which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continued through full resumption (con't)

  • This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program.

  • This is a developmental position; This position may be filled at the GS-09 with promotion potential to the GS-11. This position may also be filled at the Fully Qualified GS-11 level based on the qualification of the candidate.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions, Archivist Series, 1420. BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Basic Requirements: Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government. or Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: GS-09: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-07, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes knowledge of general archival principles and procedures and historical methods, principles, concepts, methodology, and techniques, to include knowledge of United States and USAF history, the history of air power, and/or military aerospace history including knowledge of the USAF's heraldry and emblem programs. Specialized experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values. The following are illustrative of kinds of experience that may be accepted as meeting the specialized experience requirements: (1) experience as an archivist in Federal, state, religious institution, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories, and (2) experience of an archival nature that involved research in archival science, or in a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations, or international law. NOTE: You must submit copies of your college transcripts. GS-11: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-09, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes knowledge of general archival principles and procedures and historical methods, principles, concepts, methodology, and techniques, to include knowledge of United States and USAF history, the history of air power, and/or military aerospace history including knowledge of the USAF's heraldry and emblem programs. Note: You must submit a copy of official transcripts. OR EDUCATION: GS-09: Successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B or J.D. in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position. NOTE: You must submit copies of your college transcripts. GS-11: Successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B or J.D. in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position. NOTE: You must submit copies of your college transcripts. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Less than the full amount of specialized experience described in the job opportunity announcement; however have at least one year of progressively higher level graduate education, but have not obtained a master's or equivalent graduate degree. Therefore, have a combination of experience and education. NOTE: You must submit copies of your college transcripts. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-­grade requirements to be considered eligible. GS-09: One year at the GS-07 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-09 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. GS-11: One year at the GS-09 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-11 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications, for both the GS-09 and GS-11, will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of general archival principles and procedures and historical methods, principles, concepts, methodology, and techniques, to include knowledge of United States and USAF history, the history of air power, and/or military aerospace history including knowledge of the USAF's heraldry and emblem programs. Skills in historical research, including the ability to determine the validity of historical information. Skill in professional historical writing, including the ability to present information objectively. Skill in researching records to extract detailed information, to include skill in organizing files, documents and records. Skill in the use of personal computer for researching and maintaining databases, retrieving information, scanning documents and heraldry products, word processing, graphic design, and electronic transmission of information. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
