Duties

The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. This is an approach to healthcare that empowers and equips people to take charge of their health and well-being and live their lives to the fullest. As an employee operating in a Whole Health System of care, you will operate in a model with three core elements, seeking to create a personalized health plan for each Veteran. This is done in the context of healing relationships and healing environments and a connection back to the Veteran's community. This aligns with the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Mission Statement to Honor America's Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being. The Physician Assistant (PA) assists with the total care of the patient's medical needs by performing consultations and subsequent care as needed, ordering appropriate lab tests, and evaluating those tests, to ensure quality care of the patient. This includes managing disease problems related to hospice and palliative care needs, providing follow-up as needed, and education of patient, family, and staff. Writes prescriptions in accordance with Federal and State law and as allowed by Clinical Privileges Documents. The PA provides care and counseling of persons in the promotion and maintenance of health and prevention of illness and injury based upon systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate clinical judgment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as case finding, consults and referral, health counseling; provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being; and executing medical regimens including administering medications and treatments. Duties of the Hospice and Palliative Care Physician Assistant Include but are Not Limited to: Review Hospice and Palliative Care (HPC) consults and determine appropriate scheduling into the HPC clinics. Evaluate Veterans by face-to-face or by video connection and manage symptoms through an integrative approach as part of the HPC program. Lead goals of care discussions and use these to develop and document appropriate advance care plans with Veteran and/or surrogate. Readdress as appropriate. Work closely with other members of the Hospice and Palliative Care team to manage seriously ill Veteran care needs effectively and efficiently. Work with Primary Care Teams, Specialty Medicine and Surgical teams as well as collaborate with Psychology, Whole Health, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Pharmacy, and Pain services to manage chronic pain and other symptoms for optimum control. Collaborate and lead quality improvement initiatives at the hospital and VISN level. Must have a controlled substance registration certificate from the DEA and be able to prescribe controlled substances if needed. May perform battlefield acupuncture and joint injections. Lead education of VA staff and trainees in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Participate in call coverage for the service. Other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 7:30am-4:00pm

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Physician Assistant Basic Requirements Master's degree in any discipline or a bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant ~AND~ Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: Certified in Hospice and Palliative Care or willing to become certified in 1 year of hire. Experience in treatment of serious illness and addressing end -of-life issues with patients and families. References: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-8 Physician Assistant Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. The full performance level of this vacancy is 3. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of 2 to 3. Physical Requirements: This position requires a pre-employment physical.
