Nurse Anesthesia is an advanced clinical nursing specialty based upon a graduate level curriculum focused on development of clinical judgment and critical thinking. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are qualified to render patients insensible to pain and emotional stress during surgical, obstetrical, diagnostic and invasive procedures utilizing general and regional anesthesia and all levels of sedation techniques.

Duties

CRNA Educator-Coordinator: Coordinates an education program, Phase I (non-clinical) and/or Phase II (clinical), for nurse anesthesia students or health care trainees who rotate through the VA Healthcare System. This CRNA must have an academic appointment from an accredited school of nurse anesthesia. Participates in the ongoing education of clinical staff through the available modalities of training including simulation, computer, and hands-on learning. Participates in ongoing evidence-based practice development. Provides feedback to students, faculty, and the University Program Director in a timely fashion. Performs clinical and didactic teaching, commitment to in-service training for staff, and facility continuing education in order to provide accurate information to population serviced. Participates as a clinical instructor for all trainees that affiliate with the Anesthesiology Clinical Care Center for their clinical anesthesia education. Establishes an active professional involvement with the academic community Has administrative and technical responsibility for maintaining professional standards of practice in accordance with the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA). This may include development of the orientation programs for the students, journal club, scheduling, counseling and grading students, monitoring cases, assisting with research projects, coordinating with didactic instructors and clinical anesthesia staff for student progress. Assists and provides development opportunities for primary clinical instructors and other department members to maintain their skills and keep current with progressive technical knowledge Serves as interdepartmental liaison, interfacing with other departments such as nursing, surgery, PACU, outpatient surgery, admissions, administration, laboratory, pharmacy, etc., to incorporate the expertise of all disciplines in a comprehensive, integrated approach to care. Has knowledge to provide advice and assistance to other nurse anesthetists in unusually difficult or complex cases. This anesthetist has the experience, skill set, and knowledge to provide anesthesia services for complex procedures and to be a resource to other anesthesia providers within the department. Ability to administer, evaluate, and provide sound statistical research, which may promote clinical and didactic evolution and expertise in the field of anesthesia. Knowledge to implement educational strategies to meet changes clinically, academically, and professionally, related to nurse anesthesia May chair or co-chair graduate level research to assist students in researching, reviewing/approving research proposal and finished product. Knowledge to support and prepare for the program's accreditation process by the COA of Nurse Anesthesia Has skills for the development, implementation, evaluation, and on-going updating of clinical curriculum and evaluation. This includes a monitoring program of continuing education for current CRNAs' required CEUs according to the NBCRNA guidelines. Also develops student curriculum and evaluation process. Facilitates communication between students, faculty, and other site coordinators to oversee/manage the clinical education of students Actively participates in the nursing, anesthesia, and interdisciplinary management groups, providing guidance and direction related to nurse anesthesia practice throughout the medical center, with the academic affiliations, and at the VISN and national levels. Works collaboratively with the Chief CRNA and Chief of Anesthesia in a joint leadership role for furthering of the VA Mission and Vision. Additional Clinical Responsibilities: 1. Precepts CRNA students, and mentors Nursing students. Participates in the ongoing education of clinical staff through the available modalities of training including Simulation, Computer, and hands on learning. Participates in ongoing evidence-based practice development. 2. Completes monthly Do-It educational activities for the service and maintains documentation of completion. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: 5 years CRNA experience DNP (Doctorate of Nursing Practice) or DNAP (Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Practice) Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse IV - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 4-5 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and appropriate basic or advanced certification desired, and approximately 3-4 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. The following list of knowledge, skills and abilities present the skill set expected of a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (Nurse Educator). 1. Ability to facilitate communication between students, faculty, and other site coordinators to oversee/manage the clinical education of students. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting.
