About the Position: Perform journeyman level electrician duties at the London Lock and Dam located in London WV and RC Byrd Lock and Dam located in Gallipolis Ferry WV. Operate and maintain all electrical components, panels, and circuitry at the facility, as well as associated office buildings, public use area, and sewage and water systems. Position is located within the Army Corps of Engineers, Huntington District's Operations and Readiness Division.

Duties

Operate and maintain sewage and water systems. Perform installation of new equipment, diagnostic and preventive maintenance inspections, repairs, parts replacement, and, overhaul lock operating systems, machinery, and related equipment. Perform locking operations to expedite boat traffic through the facility. Inspect, troubleshoot, and/or disassemble electric, diesel, and gasoline engines such as large mobile cranes, bulkhead hoists, generators, pumps, and compressors. Operate traveling bulkhead hoist and/or mobile crane. Interpret and apply engineering specifications and manufacture blueprints, diagrams, and manuals to isolate and solve problems.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Pre-employment and random drug testing required as part of the Civilian Drug Testing Program.
  • Valid, State-issued Driver's License is Required.
  • Pre-Employment Physical Required.
  • Must possess and retain verifiable Journeyman State Electrical License or equal and must have a Certification of Electrical course from a vocational school or equal.
  • Must obtain and maintain the Inland Marine Transportation System (IMTS) Certification within one year of entering the position.
  • Must wear safety equipment and/or use personal protective equipment (PPE) when needed.
  • Must adhere to the District's Electrical Safety Program which provides guidance on electrical safety topics such as lockout/tag out and arc flash safety.

Perform common electrical duties related to installing, repairing, modifying, troubleshooting, loading, and testing new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures and controls. Duties also included abilities to diagnose, modify, overhaul, repair, and maintain a variety of electrical devices, equipment, and components. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical effort: Work requires frequent standing, stooping, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Uses coordination of eyes, hands, legs, and body in installing, repairing, or testing equipment in confined spaces such as manholes, enclosed switchgear, or on overhead structures; climbs ladders and poles. Machinery on high lift structures is large and requires the skills of a heavy construction mechanic to effect repair or replacement. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside during the day or night subject to inclement weather, on high structures usually over water that is frequently turbulent, in the proximity of moving machinery and high tension electrical equipment, on scaffolds and from slings or floating plant. Occasionally will work behind bulkheads or in tunnels below water level. Incumbent is subject to falls, drowning, injury, or discomfort and when inside, exposure to moving machinery, electrical circuits, and loud noises. Uses safety equipment such as life vests, protective ear devices, hard hats, hard toe shoes, respirators, and protective clothing.
