Duties

The purpose of this position is to perform skilled work including carpentry, masonry, plumbing and welding for construction, renovation or repair of various facilities.Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.Typical work assignments include: - Using a wide variety of specialty carpentry machines and tools to accomplish specialized carpentry tasks such as cutting bevels, chamfers, dados, miter joints, laminating and the bending of wood.- Planning, measuring and laying out carpentry materials by interpreting complex or incomplete instructions, sketches, blueprints and building codes; using advanced shop mathematics for complex and exacting projects, such as arcs/circles and tangents for historic applications, windows, and molding applications.- Installing, modifying and repairing plumbing systems.- Maintaining and constructing common face brick, terra cotta, and other stone masonry.- Performing a variety of welding processes including, but not limited to, manual welding processes, electric, hydrogen, and oxyacetylene welding, and gas torch cutting.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • The position requires a valid state driver's license.
  • Applicant is required to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.

Qualifications

Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: * Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT)* Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc * Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)* Use of Measuring Instruments* Ability to interpret instructions, specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading)* Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.* Knowledge of MaterialsNational Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
