The incumbent, as an expert Archivist, is responsible for the proper management and care of the archival manuscript, still image, moving image, and/or internet-based collections of NLM, with full technical authority and responsibility for managing specific portions of the archival collection which may include manuscripts, motion pictures, video recordings, sound recordings, prints, photographs, ephemera, blogs, web sites, born-digital files, and other materials.

Duties

Serves as the primary subject matter expert on all matters relating to Archives and Modern Manuscripts, Audio-Visuals, Prints and Photographs, or the Digital Manuscripts. Applies expert archival knowledge to manage collection maintenance activities, including coordinating the duplication/digitization of materials, and maintaining an inventory of the collection. Monitors, evaluates, and tests new technological developments in relation to their potential use in the changing environment of archiving for digital libraries and networked repositories. Stays abreast of new developments and investigates new technological advances including both hardware and software to see if or how they can improve products or services related to the archival collections. Prepares specialized analytical and statistical reports to evaluate existing and develop new and/or improved approaches to ensure processes and policies effectively support products and programs. Represents the National Library of Medicine in interactions with a variety of internal and external individuals and Federal and private organizations to exchange highly specialized technical information on trends and technology.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government. OR A combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Evaluation of Experience: Professional experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values. The following are illustrative of kinds of experience that may be accepted as meeting the professional experience requirements: (1) experience as an archivist in Federal, state, religious institution, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories, and (2) experience of an archival nature that involved research in archival science, or in a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations, or international law. .Additional Requirements:You qualify at the GS-13 level, if you meet the following qualification requirements: You must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector which demonstrates having experience as an archivist in Federal, state, religious institution, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories; experience arranging and describing collections, experience creating finding aids and other access tools; experience using best practices in housing, reformatting, and storing archival materials; and/or experience involving research in archival science, or in a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations, or international law. You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
