About the Position: Serves as Supervisory Civil Engineering Technician with responsibility for directing the efficient and effective accomplishment of assigned activities, provides technical guidance and instruction on work requirements, methods, and procedures, and resolves technical problems encountered by subordinates.

Duties

Develop schedules, plan the accomplishment of the workload, establish deadlines, and set priorities. Advise and assist subordinates in unusual problems and render decisions on difficult work encountered or problems referred. Direct efforts of subordinates involved in performing efficient and effective reconnaissance surveys of district waterways. Review work of subordinates to ensure that procedures, methods, and deadlines are being met. Review survey information on Mississippi River, Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, and other major and minor waterways submitted by subordinates. Communicates with pilots' associations, steamship companies and other maritime interests, supplying them with other evaluations and making appropriate determinations where improvements are required.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Appointment to this position may be subject to a one-year probationary period.
  • Possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License.
  • This position requires working an alternate work schedule of Monday through Thursday, 10-hour days, 4 days a week.
  • Supervisory Probationary Period may be required.

Specialized Experience for the GS-12: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Coordinating and scheduling hydrographic survey operations AND 2) Reviewing and evaluating field reports on channel conditions AND 3) Coordinating utilization of vessels, equipment, and personnel AND 4) Assisting with budgeting boat rentals and labor expenditures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Civil EngineeringLeadershipSurveying Time in Grade Requirement: Time-In-Grade requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) Position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade GS 11 for the GS 12 (or equivalent). With regards to time-in-grade validation, if you held a position other than a GS pay plan, be sure your resume includes the pay plan and the salary you earned during the assignment. Without this information, your time-in-grade validation may not be able to be verified and will result in your not meeting the time-grade requirement for this vacancy.
